A proud native of Boston, Massachusetts, Emmanuel relocated his family to Virginia Beach in 1992. They eventually forgave him for this, however, when they discovered that the ocean is a lot warmer here than up north.

Although he has adopted many of the local customs, Emmanuel remains an unapologetic fan of his hometown sports teams, and still experiences an occasional twinge of homesickness during the fall months. According to his wife Henriette, his favorite hobby is taking up new hobbies. While there is some truth to that statement, a few of his interests have endured: the outdoor life, the study of languages, and a lifelong passion for the martial arts.
