altFrom the colorful cast of characters at the Homecoming Parade to the fun and friendship of the annual Alumni Tailgate, from the down-home, feel-good sounds of the Pump Boys and Dinettes theater production to the festive mood of the Homecoming Dance—Homecoming and Parent Weekend, Oct. 7-9, 2011, was certainly one to remember. Three days of picture-perfect weather provided the ideal backdrop for alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends to gather and celebrate on the occasion of Virginia Wesleyan College’s 50th anniversary.

This year’s Homecoming Parade, held on Friday afternoon on the Batten Center sidewalk and hosted by the Student Government Association, was a trip through the decades as student groups, athletic teams, faculty and staff paid tribute to the College’s first half century with everything from tie-dyes to track suits. The VWC Women’s Basketball team dribbled away with the “Best Overall” prize for their choreographed homage to the “Evolution of Dance.” But Dean David Buckingham wowed the crowd when he made an entrance in a bright orange leisure suit.

The Alumni Awards Reception and Ceremony, also on Friday afternoon, honored two distinguished alumni, Earle Mobley ’82 and Jesse Fanshaw III ’72, as well as the Women of Wesleyan, who were instrumental in the early years before the College had a substantial number of alumni.

Friday evening was the popular Oktoberfest Dinner and a presentation of the musical production Pump Boys and Dinettes, directed by Professor of Theater Sally Shedd and boasting a cast of five current Virginia Wesleyan students along with a live band. Set in a gas station and diner on Highway 57 and featuring songs like "Farmer Tan," "Fisherman's Prayer," "Mamaw," and "Drinkin' Shoes," the show ran through Sunday afternoon.

Saturday was the big day with alumni sports events, the Alumni Tailgate and Reunions, Academic Tent, Men's Soccer Game versus Washington and Lee, Theater Alumni Reception and Homecoming Dance at the Westin Town Center Virginia Beach. This year’s Homecoming King and Queen were Dominique Fowler ’12 and Tiffany Tuggle ’12.

Early VWC faculty and staff also gathered on Saturday morning in the Schafer Room of the Batten Student Center to share candid memories and stories from the formative years of Virginia Wesleyan College in a presentation called “Tales that Can Now Be Told.”

The Virginia Wesleyan Parents’ Council was also on campus during Homecoming Weekend. New members attended an Orientation Luncheon on Friday, and the group’s regular business meeting was held later that day. Parents’ Council members also attended the Alumni Awards Reception, the Homecoming Parade, a special “Brunch Under the Big Top” on Saturday and a variety of other Homecoming events.

The festivities came to a close on Sunday with an Ecumenical Worship Service, a Catholic Mass, and brunch in the Boyd Dining Center.
