September’s Citizen Spotlight is on Senior Corrina Clark
Corrina’s involvement in community life centers around impacting children and contributing to finding a cure for cancer. She is involved in planning for the Circle K Neighborhood Tutoring program, which she will direct this year, and supporting fundraising efforts for cancer research through Wesleyan’s Relay for Life Team. Corrina has recorded 292 hours of service since 2002. Hats off to you, Corrina!
October’s Citizen Spotlight is on Senior Lauren Newell
Lauren Newell has recorded 885 hours since November 2002, largely with the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, a volunteer emergency medical service. In addition, she has participated in community service activities with Relay for Life and service-learning experiences in the recreation-leisure studies curriculum. Currently, Lauren is spearheading an effort to send care packages to American troops in Iraq.
November’s Citizen Spotlight is on Senior Jessica Tibbetts
Jessica has contributed 391 hours of service since arriving on campus as a freshman. Her primary involvement has been as a volunteer through Circle K, an international service organization in the Kiwanis family. She is immediate past Lt. Governor of the organization and currently serves as an officer on the district. She is a leader in our campus Club and was instrumental this year in the club’s support of a cure for cancer, organizing the Great American Smoke Out and being one of 17 students to walk in the Strides Against Cancer walk in Richmond in October. She is past student director of the Club’s Neighborhood Tutoring Program, in which she continues to volunteer. Jessica is also active in the campus club Relay for Life, supporting the American Cancer Society.
February’s Citizen Spotlight is on Junior Toya Williams
Toya has logged 199 service hours since arriving on campus this fall; 81 of those hours was as a volunteer at Ingleside and Campostella Elementary Schools where her children, age 6 and 11 attend. In addition to her parental involvement, as a resident of East Hall this past fall, Toya lent leadership to recycling efforts, the Toys for Tots drive, and Circle K’s card making for sick children. An active student and mother, Toya believes giving back is important and makes time for it in her busy life.
March’s Citizen Spotlight is on Senior Martha Blevins
Martha has recorded 319 hours on the Service Log since her freshman year, and these don’t include her leadership of the Winter Session course on disaster relief that took her to Mississippi to help with the rebuilding effort there or her leadership of the alternative spring break trip back to Mississippi in March. Martha has been a consistent presence in the Office of Community Service. Each of her four years she has participated in the MDA Labor Day Telethon and United Way Day of Caring and was instrumental in launching Wesleyan’s Cooking for Kids Program. She has been active in Circle K (namely tutoring), First Year Leadership Council and Wesleyan Ambassadors. In addition, she has been either a volunteer or intern with the local affiliate of St. Jude’s Hospital for a number of years. Martha embodies citizenship through service to the community and active involvement in campus life.
April’s Citizen Spotlight is on Michelle Jones
Michelle is a transfer student who jumped right into community service when arriving on campus. She assisted the Youth Crisis Center in locating lost children during the Neptune Festival, helped out at the Children’s Christmas Party, shopped for and delivered Toys for Tots to the Salvation Army, participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Walk and assisted the National Kidney Foundation with their awards ceremony. Most notably, Michelle initiated and co-led the alternative spring break trip to Pearlington, Mississippi in March, a significant time commitment. She most certainly has made every effort to improve life wherever she is.
