Spiritual Life

Campus Worship Spirit 400

Worship services are held each Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. inside the Hospitality Suite on the second floor of the Jane P. Batten Student Center during the academic semesters, when school is in session. The services are ecumenical toward all Christians, very casual and geared toward students. Services last for about 45 minutes with a focus on sharing from the community, music, prayer, scripture and a brief homily followed with eucharist celebrated by our Chaplain. Occasional services are offered throughout the year when a need from the campus community warrants a service and during special events such as Ash Wednesday and Parents Weekend.

The Chaplain is available to discuss wedding plans for students, faculty, staff, alumni or friends of the College. Monumental Chapel is open to the general public for weddings, provided scheduling arrangements are approved through the Chaplain's Office and placed on the Chapel calendar. The telephone number for the office is 757.455.3400.

Bible study

Push It! A unique bible study is held weekly inside the Chaplain's Office each semester and is open to all students. Contemporary issues and topics are discussed in relation to the Christian faith.

Spiritual life retreats

During the fall and spring semesters, students are invited to leave the demands of campus life and "get away from it all." Our spiritual life retreats are designed to bring renewal and refreshment to the soul. The spring 2006 retreat will be held March 31-April 2 at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville, Va. With the assistance of the Chaplain's Office, expenses for the retreat are lowered to accommodate student budgets.

The Listening Post

Look for the table with a bistro tablecloth. Pull up a chair. Sit down and crack open some of the best peanuts in Virginia. The Listening Post is a place where you can come and talk about whatever. A great place to feel welcomed and to meet new friends.

Chappy's Cantina

A campus original. Look for the big cart on wheels. Cold lemonade. Fresh hot cocoa and coffee. Chappy is always serving it up for members of the Wesleyan community. These "goodies" are free for the asking. Want to leave a tip? Proceeds go toward an appropriate mission cause sponsored by the United Methodist Church.
