92 ° Partly Cloudy
Severna Park High School, Severna Park, Maryland
Major: Business & Psychology
I started out looking at big schools, and it took me a while to realize that for me to thrive, I would need the personality of a small school. VWC offers me so many more opportunities than I would have had at a large school. I can play a sport, know my professors personally, feel comfortable participating in small, intimate classrooms, and get involved with the extracurricular activities.
Volleyball, Peer Adviser, Community Service, Honors & Scholars, and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
My favorite class was a History of Nazi Germany class. It seems weird, but the class was so interesting! It also really showed me how VWC is so different from other colleges. In this class I was literally called out by my professor for not talking and participating in discussions, which was exactly the plight I tried to avoid by not going to a big school. After that I began to participate in class and talk about the readings and the lecture, and I was able to really get into it. I definitely started learning better and I was able to connect with my professor and classmates, which is what VWC is all about!
Go to a school that suits you. Yeah, everyone wants to go to a big party school and have the big name on their diploma, but know yourself. If you know you'll get lost in the numbers, go small! If you want to be part of something big, by the thousands, and know you can manage it, go big! College is going to be your home for the next four years (at least), so choose somewhere you'll be comfortable.
