1. Crimes or other emergencies can be reported to the Campus Security Office, located in Bray Village, or by contacting the Campus Security dispatcher at 455-3349.
2. Campus Security and Residence Life professional staff members will respond to such reports and, in collaboration with the Dean of Students Office, will distribute advisories to the campus community as necessary. All validated reported crimes will be included in the statistics section of the annual Campus Security Report (CSR).
3. Confidential reports by victims or witnesses of a crime can be made to Campus Security, Residence Life and the Dean of Students Office. Confidential reports of sexual assaults can be made to the above offices and also to the Sexual Assault Protocol Coordinator. Validated reports will be included in the annual CSR.
4. Unauthorized access to campus facilities is prohibited. Campus Security and Residence Life duty staff perform regular security checks on all campus facilities to ensure offices and student residences remain closed and secured when not in use.
5. Campus community members should promptly report any crimes to Campus Security. The reporting individual, Campus Security, Residence Life and Dean of Students offices will collaborate to determine if local law enforcement, professional college counselors or the Sexual Assault Protocol Coordinator should be contacted to assist in addressing the reported crime and assisting the reporting individual.
6. Campus Security and Residence Life offices collaborate to provide regular crime prevention and personal security programs such as an escort service, emergency call boxes, facility alarm systems, property identification engraving and sexual assault awareness initiatives and educational programs.
7. Local police agencies will report to Campus Security any crimes occurring off-campus and involving Virginia Wesleyan students and organizations. In situations where students are involved in violations of college policies and/or Virginia statutes, the college may pursue both internal administrative and external criminal charges. The Dean of Students will initiate internal disciplinary proceedings according to the college's Community Standards as they relate to conduct and behavior required of all students.
8. The College is committed to upholding the local, state and federal laws pertaining to the use of alcohol. This commitment is clearly reflected by the standards set forth in our Policy on Alcohol and Other Drugs, the Student Handbook and the substance abuse policy for employees. As to the students, fair and consistent application and enforcement of the alcohol and other drug policy is accomplished through the Community Arbitration System.
9. The College is committed to upholding the local, state and federal laws pertaining to the unlawful possession, use or distribution of illegal drugs or of legal drugs improperly obtained. Any student found possessing, using or distributing illicit and/or unlawful drugs or using lawful drugs not prescribed to such student is subject to immediate disciplinary or administrative action. Ordinarily, a student found in violation of the college's drug policy can expect to receive the sanction of suspension or dismissal.
10. The College is committed to providing education awareness and prevention programs addressing alcohol and drug abuse as identified in Section 120 of Higher Education Amendments of 1998. To promote this education and awareness, the College's Campus Security, Health Services, Counseling Services, and Residence Life offices frequently collaborate to provide programmatic, peer, mentor, counseling and external agency resources to the campus community.
11. In accordance with the federal Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act, 20 U.S.C. Section 1092 (f)(1)(I) (2002), the College informs the campus community of how to access law enforcement agency information concerning any known, registered sex offenders who are enrolled or employed at the College. Such information may be obtained by clicking on the hyperlink marked "Sex Offender Registry" located on the Virginia State Police internet web site.
12. The College promotes campus sexual assault prevention through educational programs and sexual assault response protocol awareness. The protocol includes:
    • Residence Life and Counseling Services Offices, in collaboration with the college's Sexual Assault Friends & Educators (S.A.F.E.) Committee, uses residential programs, published literature, and community agency resources to promote awareness of rape, acquaintance rape, and other sex offenses.
    • Students should contact the Sexual Assault Protocol Coordinator, Campus Security, Residence Life, Counseling Services or Dean of Students offices or Response if they are a victim of or witness a sexual assault. To aid in apprehension and conviction, victims should not bathe, use hygiene products or wash their clothes until examination by a medical provider and processing by law enforcement is complete.
    • Students may, with or without the assistance of the College, contact local law enforcement agencies to report a sexual assault.
    • Sexual assault victims will be provided with contact information and resources from on-campus Counseling Services and off-campus community agencies.
    • Ordinarily, students who are victims of a sexual assault and wish to address the violation through the College's arbitration system will begin at Community Arbitration Board (CAB) level. This occurs due to the nature of sexual assault violations, in which confidentiality and sensitivity to both parties are paramount, and such violations will be addressed by the CAB unless all students involved request otherwise.
    • Behavior which is reasonably construed as unwanted physical contact of a sexual nature; contact which caused physical or emotional discomfort to the person who is a victim of that contact. Students violating the College policy of unwanted physical contact of a sexual nature may receive sanctions to include, but not limited to, suspension or dismissal from the College, change in living arrangements and required counseling.
    • Victims of sexual assault will receive notification that the College will change a victim's academic and living situation after an alleged sex offense and of the options for those changes, if they are requested and are reasonably available.
    • The College will afford the accuser and the accused the same opportunities to have others present during a campus disciplinary proceeding.
    • The College will provide notification to both the accuser and the accused of the outcome (final determination with respect to the alleged offense and any sanction that is imposed) of any campus disciplinary proceeding brought alleging an offense.
