Jun 15, 2009: Earth-Friendly And Green Renovations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College is continuing its commitment to the Marlins Go Green Campaign, which provides campus initiatives to be more environmentally conscious, by upcycling old wooden furniture during campus renovations this summer.

The latest green practice at the College involves the innovative reuse of 40-year-old wooden wardrobes in Gum Hall, located in Village II. Solid oak doors from the wardrobes are being built into 50 fan coil units, 60 window soffits and approximately 20 three-level book shelves. A total of 23 dorm rooms are receiving the greening renovations.

"This initiative is not only saving the College money but it's a conscious effort to reuse the materials instead of filling up our land fills," said Vice President of Operations Bruce Vaughan. Total cost savings for the College are estimated around $1,000, said Vaughan.

Renovations to Gum Hall include new wardrobes and desks being installed in each room, and the remodeling of community bathrooms, including new sinks and showers.

All renovations to Gum Hall are expected to be complete by July 19.

About the Marlins Go Green Campaign
Recognizing the importance of environmental stewardship, Virginia Wesleyan College has set a campus greening initiative as one of its top priorities. President Billy Greer established the President's Environmental Issues Council (PEIC) in 2005 to promote a strong environmental ethic and cultivate sustainable policies, practices and curricula throughout Virginia Wesleyan College.

Through its broad membership, the Council works with campus leaders to address environmental issues on campus and to promote conservation and environmental stewardship among Virginia Wesleyan's students, faculty and staff.
