Jun 28, 2006: Tennis' Wright Is Top Rookie In Virginia
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FERRUM, Va. - Marlin men's tennis player Steven Wright recently received the distinction of being named the first College Division Rookie-of-the-Year as part of the 2006 men's All-State honors determined by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.
Fellow Marlins Jeff Zenisek and Eric Caudill also earned a place in history as members of the VaSID's inaugural men's all-state tennis team. Both players were named to the six-man first team, while Wright was part of the six-man second team.
All three players were instrumental in helping Virginia Wesleyan to a program-best 17-2 finish, including a third-place showing in the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. Wright finished as the ODAC runner-up at No. 3 singles, earned first team All-ODAC honors and was named the league's Rookie-of-the-Year, the first in VWC history.
Overall, Wright compiled an impressive 12-3 record, including a record-tying 11-1 showing at the No. 3 flight. He also compiled a 16-4 record in doubles, highlighted by a 14-3 mark at the No. 2 flight with teammate Tom Popomaronis. The duo set VWC's flight record at No. 2, topping the previous mark of 17-5 recorded by Marc Casperino and Mike Blank in 1992.
Zenisek and Caudill also set records, primarily in doubles where the duo posted a 21-2 finish, including a 20-1 showing at the No. 1 flight. Both results set new VWC records, marking Zenisek and Caudill as the first Marlin doubles team in history to record 20+ victories. Their season was capped by winning VWC's first ODAC doubles championship, at the No. 1 flight, ending Washington and Lee University's 14-year winning streak at the flight and 10-year streak of doubles sweeps in the tournament.
