Jun 21, 2006: Virginia Wesleyan Student Selected To Attend Leadership Development Institute

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH â?" Virginia Wesleyan student Michelle Jones has been selected to participate in the Collegiate Women of Color Leadership Development Institute on August 10-13 at the Mt. Washington Conference Center in Baltimore, Md.

Jones, a rising senior from Jacksonville, Fla., is a Health and Human Services major. She serves as the Executive Director of the Traditions committee of the Wesleyan Activities Council (WAC) and was a site leader for the IMAGINE: Gulf Coast spring break excursion, during which Virginia Wesleyan students helped to build houses for Katrina victims in Pearlington, Miss. In addition, she is a volunteer with the National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias.

Fifty applicants were selected from a pool of applicants from 650 private schools who are members of the foundation for independent higher education. The award consists of a $2,500 stipend to be used for a project on campus, in the community or at a corporation in the studentâ??s field of study as well as admission to the development institute, at which students will refine their projects and learn more about servant leadership.

Grounded in the servant leader philosophy, the Institute will provide collegiate women with opportunities to test and improve their leadership skills. Through workshops, presentations, panel discussions and a student-led internship project, participants will experience what it means to be a servant leader.
