Jun 12, 2006: Virginia Wesleyan Takes Runner-up Spot For Conference's Commissioner's Cup

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SALEM, Va. â?" Virginia Wesleyan College's best season ever in intercollegiate athletics has earned the Marlins' program the runner-up spot in the final standings for the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Commissioner's Cup.

Recently renamed the Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup, the award is presented annually to the ODAC member that compiles the highest point total based on finishes in the 22 league-sponsored sports. Virginia Wesleyan, which fields teams in 19 of those sports, scored 112 points, its highest total ever en route to its best finish ever.

The award follows a year of unparalleled athletic success for VWC as every Marlin team that compiles a win-loss record produced a winning record. The Marlins produced an impressive 220-84-2 record overall, including a 106-33-1 record in ODAC competition.

Virginia Wesleyan, which tied Bridgewater College for the No. 2 spot in the Cup standings behind Washington and Lee University, garnered first-place points in men's soccer, field hockey, women's soccer and men's basketball and second-place points in womenâ??s lacrosse. The Marlins received third-place points in baseball, menâ??s tennis, women's basketball and softball.

Overall, Virginia Wesleyan's men's teams tallied 46 points, while the women's teams tallied 66 points, the latter the second-highest total among all the ODAC members. The men's total tops their previous high of 42.5 points scored during the 2003-04 season ad the women's total eclipses their former high mark of 59.5 points scored during the 2004-05 campaign. This year's runner-up finish overall marks the fourth consecutive year for Virginia Wesleyan to finish among the top five in the 13-member league.

The Commissioner's Cup was renamed this year in honor of former ODAC Commissioner Dan Wooldridge in honor of his excellent service to the league from its beginning until 1997.

Final overall standings are as follows:

Guilford College, Eastern Mennonite University 67.5; 9. Emory & Henry College 52; 10. Hampden-Sydney College 48.5; 11. Hollins University 19; 12. Randolph-Macon Womanâ??s College, Sweet Briar College 16.
