Feb 3, 2009: Center's Nexus Series Resumes, Focusing On Judaism

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. - The Center for the Study of Religious Freedom (CSRF) at Virginia Wesleyan College discusses Judaism in the third session of its Nexus Interfaith Dialogues Series, "Questioning Faiths: Open Windows and Revolving Doors," at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9 in the Boyd Dining Center.

Panelists for the discussion include: Bobbie Fisher, Chief Communications officer at WHRO and a member of the board of Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities; Kathryn Morton, Education Director at Temple Israel and principal of the United Hebrew School of Tidewater who served on a NEXUS panel in 2005; Darva Gruber, a military wife of Philippine/Hawaiian descent who converted to Judaism after a number of years of living in a household with her Jewish husband and consenting to raise their children in the Jewish faith; and Thomas Roper, a former Baptist minister who turned to Reform Judaism.

The 2008-09 Nexus Series examines why people change faiths and why some stay, as well as what elements make members of the faith uncomfortable, what attracts newcomers, what newcomers struggle with, and what established members struggle with.

This event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the CSRF, The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and The Virginian-Pilot. The fourth session of the original five-part series will examine Christianity at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March. 9.
