Mar 20, 2008: College Establishes Athletic Hall Of Fame

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – An Athletic Hall of Fame has been established to honor those who by outstanding achievement in athletics, by service to athletics, or through significant contributions to athletics, have made lasting contributions to Virginia Wesleyan College's (VWC) intercollegiate athletic program.
The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee held its first meeting on Thursday, March 13, 2008. The Inaugural Committee members are: Gary D. Bonnewell '79, first vice president wealth management, Smith Barney and member of the VWC Board of Trustees; Donald M. Forsyth, former athletic director, men's basketball and golf coach for VWC; Timothy E. Hopkins '91, school counselor, Oakton High School and former VWC men's soccer player; and Jennifer D. Jellig '01, third-grade teacher, Three Oaks Elementary School and former VWC cross country runner. The following staff/faculty members at VWC are also Inaugural Committee members: Dr. Larry D. Hultgren, professor of philosophy and VWC NCAA faculty representative; Joanne Renn, athletic director and assistant tennis coach; J.P. Stewart, men's lacrosse coach; Joe Wasiluk, sports information director and Lisa Black, director of Alumni Relations. Bonnewell was elected Chair, Hultgren was elected Secretary and Stewart was elected Treasurer.
"We are excited to have this opportunity to establish a lasting tradition to honor those who have made significant contributions to the Marlin athletic program," said VWC President Dr. William T. "Billy" Greer.
Inductions of inaugural class members elected into the Athletic Hall of Fame will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009. The Committee will be accepting nominations for the Charter Class of the Athletic Hall of Fame from April through August 2008.
Those inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame will be permanently recognized in the Athletic Hall of Fame installation, which will be located adjacent to the entrance of the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
The College has received gifts from Gary D. '79 and Deborah L. Bonnewell, Tassos J. Paphites '79, William H. Williard '79, Lawrence D. and Mary L. Hultgren, Donald M. and Dianna Forsyth and Andrew C. Walker '90. The gifts will support the construction of the Athletic Hall of Fame and establish an Athletic Hall of Fame Endowment to support annual operations.
Gifts and pledges to the Athletic Hall of Fame are part of the College's Key to the Future Campaign, a vision the College has to become a Phi Beta Kappa-caliber college. The Campaign is at $48.6 million on a goal of $65 million, 75 percent of goal.
Virginia Wesleyan College boasts 19 intercollegiate sports and competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III. The athletic program at the College began in 1968 with intercollegiate competition following a year later in 1969.
