Oct 1, 2007: Virginia Conference Of The United Methodist Church Gives $1 Million To Virginia Wesleyan
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – The Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church has made gifts totaling $1,053,311 during Virginia Wesleyan College's Key to the Future Campaign, which began in July 2003. The Virginia Conference plans to support the Campaign for its duration through June 30, 2008.
The Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church supports the United Methodist Church's 250-year-old tradition of carrying out its ministry in higher education. The Virginia Conference's giving has supported the College's Annual Fund for Academic Excellence.
The Annual Fund for Academic Excellence provides funding for annual scholarships to recruit top-quality students, professional development and conference travel for faculty members, student internships, up-to-date technology in the classroom, and other critical needs to create a path to excellence for Virginia Wesleyan students and faculty.
"We are honored by the Virginia Conference's generous support of our educational mission," said President Billy Greer. "Each year, they are the largest single donor to the Annual Fund."
Virginia Wesleyan College was founded by the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church and chartered in 1961. Since 1784, hundreds of institutions of learning have been founded by United Methodists and predecessor denominations in the United States. That heritage continues in the church's sponsorship of 10 major research institutions, 13 seminaries, 82 liberal arts colleges and eight two-year colleges, one professional school and nine college preparatory schools.
"Wesleyan continues to share a strong bond with the United Methodist Church in our community," continued President Greer. "Fifty-seven different churches have given to the Key to the Future Campaign."
The Virginia Wesleyan College Key to the Future Campaign has as its goal to help fund the vision to become a Phi Beta Kappa-caliber college. The Campaign is at $45.9 million on a goal of $65 million, 71 percent of goal.
