Jun 1, 2009: The Class Of 2009 Graduates From Virginia Wesleyan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. - Approximately 260 December and May graduates and August candidates crossed the stage at Virginia Wesleyan's 40th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Cathy Lewis, veteran broadcaster and founding host of "HearSay with Cathy Lewis," addressed the Class of 2009 and spoke about how technology, specifically social media, has changed business, the role it plays in today’s job market and the challenges and opportunities graduates will face as technology continues to develop.

"While we may be using MySpace and Facebook, there are essential skills that are still valuable, like talking on the phone," said Lewis. "If you can speak well and write well, you’ll do just fine… so take that diploma and make something of the world."

Honorary degrees were presented to three candidates for their outstanding accomplishments in the arts, sciences, and service to learning and mankind. The recipients were Cathy Lewis (Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa), journalist and community leader; Robert Friend Boyd (Doctor of Laws, honoris causa), Trustee Emeritus for Virginia Wesleyan, partner in the law firm of Boyd & Boyd P.C., and business and community leader; and The Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. Horne, Jr. (Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa), Executive Director Emeritus, the Society of St. Andrews (a national hunger relief organization).

The 30th recipient of the Samuel Nelson Gray Distinguished Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Kathy Stolley, associate professor of sociology. This award recognizes effectiveness as a classroom teacher, creative activity within or pertaining to the classroom, demonstrated influence in developing professional interest and attitudes in one's academic field, and professional activity on or off campus. Annual recipients are selected by a group of students.

The sixth annual Frank and Jane P. Batten Distinguished Scholar Award was presented to Dr. Elizabeth Malcolm, assistant professor of ocean and atmospheric sciences. Recipients of this award, recognizing outstanding scholarship, are determined by nominations and votes cast by full-time teaching faculty of the College.
