May 6, 2009: Thirteen Students Inducted Into Two Honor Societies

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College inducted a total of 13 new honor students into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society and Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society, on Tuesday, April 7.

Alpha Kappa Delta has more than 80,000 members in more than 490 charted chapters in the United States, Canada, China, Finland, the Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore. The international honor society encourages the study of humanity through social awareness. To become a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, students must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, maintain a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses, must have completed at least four sociology courses prior to initiation, and officially declare sociology as their major or demonstrate a serious interest in the field.

New members inducted were Tiffany Brown '10 from Norfolk, Va.; Vanessa Diaz '10 from Chesapeake, Va.; Kathleen Kern '10 from Chesapeake, Va.; Jessica Rucka '09 from Virginia Beach, Va.; Shannon Sabo '10 from White Haven, Pa.; and Deborah Sterne '10 from Newport News, Va.

Alpha Phi Sigma is the only national criminal justice honor society for criminal justice majors. The society recognizes academic excellence of undergraduate, graduate students of criminal justice, as well as students seeking their Juris Doctor degrees in law school. Membership into the honor society is by recommendation only. Students must also complete one-third of their hours required for graduation, must have a minimum of 3.2 overall GPA, maintain a minimum 3.2 GPA in criminal justice courses and declare criminal justice as their major or minor.

New members inducted were Lamanda Beale '10 from Suffolk, Va.; Iantha Dube '09 from Virginia Beach, Va.; Timothy Maloney '10 from Houston, Del; Shelly Peabody '09 from Portsmouth, Va.; Shawon Reyes '09 from San Croix, Virgin Islands; Jessica Rucka '09 from Virginia Beach, Va.; Sarah Weatherstine '09 from Portsmouth, Va.; and Melissa Wade Yatsko '09 from Norfolk, Va.
