FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College senior Matt Ryan from Chesapeake, Va., is the recipient of the 2009 Hampton Roads American Marketing Association/Smithfield Foods Most Promising Marketer Prize. He was presented with his prize Thursday, April 9, at the monthly luncheon meeting of the Hampton Roads American Marketing Association held at the Town Point Club in Norfolk, Va.
The Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Marketing Association and Smithfield Foods, Inc. are co-sponsors of an annual $2,500 award to the most promising graduating senior in a marketing program at a 4-year college or university in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area). Ryan won the award over candidates from The College of William & Mary and Christopher Newport University.
Ryan, a double major in communications and the liberal arts management program, has woven his double major, liberal arts coursework into a tapestry of experiences.
In the summer of 2007, Ryan traveled with Batten Professor of Philosophy Dr. Steven Emmanuel, along with Associate Professor of Communications Dr. Stu Minnis to Vietnam to study the humanitarian efforts aimed at helping children in the Central Highlands region of the country. He was involved in two ways: investigating how micro-loans are being used in Central Vietnam and as a cinematographer for the film. The completed documentary Making Peace with Viet Nam, which was officially selected for screening at the Beijing International Film Festival, continues to gain international recognition.
In the summer of 2008, Ryan worked in Redondo Beach, Calif., interning at Hilb Rogal & Hobbs' excess and surplus insurance brokerage.
Ryan will be spending the summer post graduation in New York City after winning a highly competitive internship with the Ad Council as a fellow of the International Radio and Television Society Foundation.
