Jan 30, 2009: Virginia Wesleyan Competes In RecycleMania
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – For the second consecutive year, Virginia Wesleyan College is participating in RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities to promote recycling and reduce overall waste. The competition runs over a 10-week period from January 18 to March 28.
During RecycleMania, participating schools report recycling and trash data which is then ranked according to four areas: 1) who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita; 2) who collects the largest amount of total recyclables; 3) who collects the least amount of trash per capita; and 4) who has the highest recycling rate. Each week, the school's reports and rankings are posted online, motivating campuses to rally their communities to reduce waste and recycle more.
"Our goal for the competition is to not only improve from last year results, but to compete with other colleges and universities in terms of recycling and sustainability," said Kerry Brackett, director of sustainability and energy.
Virginia Wesleyan College is participating in three components of RecycleMania:
Waste Minimization
Schools compete to see which produces the least amount of municipal solid waste (both recyclables and trash) per person. This competition is intended to reward those schools that generate the least amount of combined waste and recyclables, emphasizing reuse and source reduction over recycling.
Stephan Kazki Per Capita Classic
Schools compete to see which can collect the largest combined amount of paper, cardboard and bottles and cans per person. The Per Capita Classic is the original RecycleMania competition.
Grand Champion
The Grand Champion category combines trash and core recyclable materials to determine a school's recycling rate as a percentage of its overall waste generation. Successful colleges and universities in this category demonstrate their achievement in both source reduction and recycling.
The RecycleMania competition began in the spring of 2001 between two schools who wanted to get students and staff more excited about participating in recycling efforts. More than 500 colleges and universities are participating in this year's competition.
