Oct 21, 2008: Virginia Wesleyan Observes Campus Sustainability Day
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College will observe Campus Sustainability Day on Wed., October 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lobby of Clarke Hall.
Those attending the event will be able to tour the green roof on Smithdeal Hall, receive information about Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the President’s Environmental Issues Council (PEIC) and the Student Environmental Awareness League (SEAL), as well as enjoy locally grown organic refreshments.
The celebration will also include a welcome reception for Virginia Wesleyan’s new Director of Sustainability and Energy, Kerry D. Brackett. Brackett is a Front Line Manager for ARAMARK Higher Education and began as the director of sustainability and energy, a one-year position funded by ARAMARK, on Monday, Oct. 6.
Brackett said that Virginia Wesleyan’s Campus Sustainability Day is "a celebration of past accomplishments and future plans for becoming a greener campus."
Campus Sustainability Day is an observance, started in 2002 by the Society of College and University Planners, to create discussion about ways in which campuses might be more deliberate about sustainability.
In 2005, President Billy Greer created the President's Environmental Issues Council to promote a strong environmental ethic and cultivate sustainable practices and policies at Virginia Wesleyan. For more information about the College's environmental initiatives, please visit the PEIC Web site.
