Jul 28, 2008: Raising Funds By Recycling
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College's Office of Student Activities and Office of International and Intercultural Programs (OIP) are collaborating with several other offices on campus by collecting and recycling empty ink and toner cartridges, beginning in July 2008. The recycling collection will run through the 2008-09 academic year. Funds raised through recycling efforts will be used for student programming.
The Student Activities Office, located in the Jane P. Batten Student Center, will place a recycling box in the office specifically for the collection of empty ink and toner cartridges. In addition, individuals can call the office to request that someone pick up their empty ink and toner cartridges.
Brands that can be recycled include: HP, Lexmark, Dell, Canon, Epson, Apple, IBM, Brother, Xerox and Sharp.
Kristen Whalen, director of student activities, said "when looking at fundraisers for the upcoming year, the student organizations wanted to move toward something that was more in-line with the 'Go Green' message of our campus, and the recycling of the ink and toner cartridges was a perfect fit."
This latest initiative is just one more opportunity for the campus community to promote conservation and environmental stewardship on campus, a goal set by the President's Environmental Issues Council (PEIC) in 2005. >>Read more about the PEIC
To add to Virginia Wesleyan's recycling efforts, the Office of Community Service will host a bin to collect compact florescent light bulbs and a bin to collect alkaline batteries.
Annually, more than 600 million ink cartridges are disposed in the United States. Only a small fraction of these ink cartridges are recycled and the remaining end up in our landfills. Leaking ink from used cartridges and toners can pollute our environment and the plastic they are comprised of take many generations to decompose.
