Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – More than 350 guests attended Virginia Wesleyan College's annual Spring Honors Convocation, an event that celebrates students for their academic and leadership achievement, on Friday, May 2 in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

During the event, the second annual President's Environmental Challenge Grant was awarded to Ms. Kathy Bartkus, grounds supervisor. The $2,500 grant, created by President Dr. William T. "Billy" Greer in August 2006 and administered by the President's Environmental Issues Council, is just one piece of an overall campus sustainability initiative.

Bartkus will receive funds to implement her proposal to install a series of Bollards (vertical posts) to restrict vehicle access to the campus trails network. Doing so will greatly reduce damage to trails, the arboretum and sensitive natural areas by keeping cars and trucks out of these places. This project aims to educate the campus community about the damages caused by off road vehicles. It will also save the costs of replacing damaged trees, repairing torn up areas, and the time spent towing vehicles out of mud holes. This fall the campus trails network will host the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) cross country championship, and Bartkus' project will help to ensure that the campus trails are in top shape for the event.
