Laura and Robert Rifenberry

LAURA (DORAN) RIFENBERRY ’95 married Robert Rifenberry on April 22 at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center. The Rifenberrys live in Virginia Beach, Va.

DARCY (BUMPUS) COYLE ’98 married Bradford Coyle in a waterfront wedding on Aug. 26, 2005 in Newport, R.I. Darcy is employed by UBS Prime Brokerage Services in Boston, Mass., as an Office Manager. The couple recently bought a house in Fall River, Mass.

CRYSTAL WALKER ’99 married Michael Roy Gosselin, Jr. on Nov. 14, 2005. The couple resides in Hampton, Va.

KATHRINE WEHMEYER ’99 married Kevin Klumpp on Aug. 20, 2005. The attendants included maid of honor LORI (WEHMEYER) BERTOLINE ’87 and bridesmaids JENNIFER (WEHMEYER) GODFREY ’89 and KATE WAGNER ’99.

KRISTIN (TAYLOR) REIFSNIDER ’03 married Jonathan Reifsnider on March 25 at Atlantic Shores Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va. The couple currently resides in Chesapeake, Va.

APRIL (RHODES) SHIRLEY ’04 married Nathan Shirley in Dec. 31, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nev. The couple resides in Chesapeake, Va.

ANGELA WARD ’87 recently adopted a little boy from Russia. Angela works as the director of animation and creative services with the Christian Broadcasting Network in Virginia Beach, Va.

BOBBY COLLENBERG ’90 and his wife, Julie, welcomed twin girls, Whitney and Carrie, at 12:52 p.m. and 12:53 p.m. on April 19. The Collenbergs live in Virginia Beach, Va.

LEE-ANN HOWARD O’DELL ’90 and her husband, Jeff, welcomed their second child, son Mason Grant on Dec. 13, 2005. Mason joins older sister Emilee. Lee-Ann serves as Coordinator of K-12 programs for the University of Virginia Hampton Roads Center.

HOWARD J. VAN DUYNE ’91 and DONNA L. (HARTLEY) VAN DUYNE ’92 welcomed a son, 7-pound 1-ounce Simeon Paul Van Duyne, on Jan. 25. Simeon joins siblings Jair and Hope.

MICHAEL KAPLAN ’97, M.D. and his wife, Tara, welcomed 9-pound 2-ounce Aiden Michael Kaplan on Dec. 20, 2005. Aiden joins siblings Cameron, Zachary and Delaney.

REV. JOHN B. HAYNES, JR. ’98 and his wife, Kathleen, welcomed a son, Wesley Ezekiel Haynes, on Jan. 30. John is the pastor at Bruen Chapel United Methodist Church in Fairfax, Va. Kathleen is the pastor at Annandale United Methodist Church in Annandale, Va.

HEATHER (HARDMAN) LUJAN ’98 and her husband, Arron, welcomed a son, 8-pound 10-ounce Vaughn Aldrich Lujan, on March 25. Heather works in Health Services at Princeton University in New Jersey.

JENNIFER BATTAGLIA ’99 gave birth to a son, Owen Michael Sauvager, on Jan. 7. The family resides in Buffalo, N.Y.

KATHLEEN (BLAIS) FOLEY ’99 and her husband, Ryan, welcomed son Kyle Joseph Foley on Jan. 17. Kyle joins big sister Brianna Lee, 3. Kathleen and Ryan own Foley Builders, LLC and build custom oceanfront homes in Maine.

CHAD LONGE ’99 and his wife, Colleen, welcomed daughter Juliette Alyn Longe on Aug. 25, 2005. Juliette joins half-brother Luis, 5.

Personal Updates

1970s

DEBORAH PAXSON ’75 is a judge on the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, 2nd District in Virginia.

MIKE SHEALY ’75 was promoted to senior vice president, senior client manager in Premier Banking of Bank of America in Norfolk, Va. He has been with the bank since 1988, and previously served as vice president.

JOANNE CONIGLIO ’77 was named Accomack County Teacher of the Year for 2006-07. She currently teaches music at Kegotank Elementary School.

PEPPI S. (SCHWARTZ) DAYTON (SCHWARTZ) ’79 is a 23-year veteran firefighter/paramedic for Norfolk Fire-Rescue and lives in Virginia Beach, Va.

BRUCE C. GOODSON ’79 is chairman of the James City County Board of Supervisors.

BOB PIPKIN ’79 retired from the United States Navy on Jan. 31 and is now the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va.

1980s

LONNIE BLOW’82 is the assistant men’s basketball coach at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va. He is working on a master’s degree in higher education.

MELISSA BURROUGHS ’86 has been promoted to the Regional Lending Executive for the Chesapeake Region with Old Point National Bank. She holds an MBA from Old Dominion University.

KEVIN NICKELBERRY ’86 was recently named head men’s basketball coach at Hampton University in Hampton, Va. He was the assistant men’s basketball coach at Clemson University for three seasons and has been ranked by Basketball Times, the Hoop Scoop and Rivalshoops.com as one of the top 20 assistant coaches in the country.

KAT (BALCOM) PURYEAR ’87 received her Master of Education in Instructional Design/Technology in September 2005. She currently works as a Program Coordinator with the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston, Va., where she resides with her husband, SAMMY PURYEAR ’86, and their two daughters, Sydney, 12, and Madison, 8.

PAUL EWELL ’89 and his wife, SANDRA (HEATON) ’97, recently relocated to the Shenandoah Valley, where Paul teaches at Bridgewater College and Sandra teaches at Harrisonburg High School.

1990s

BUDDY HAYES ’90 traveled to Disney for the 5K race and raised over $1,000 for CCI. Buddy was a contestant in the Ms. Wheelchair Virginia Pageant, held in Richmond in March. The pageant represents women in wheelchairs who are outstanding citizens in the community.

CHRISTOPHER ALLAN HITE ’91 is a teacher at Hohenfels Elementary School in Beratshausen, Germany. He and his wife, Eleanor Tibay, have a son, Vincent Samuel, 1.

MOLLY BOCHENEK ’92 is a psychotherapist for Pediatric & Adolescent Psychiatry Associates ADHD Center of Northern New Jersey in Morristown, N.J. She and her husband, Joe, and son, Gus, reside in Fanwood, N.J.

FRANK G. BOTTONE, Jr. ’93 is an associate medical writing scientist for Global Biostatistics and Medical Writing, Quintiles, Inc. in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

KEN FOWLER ’93 pictured with wife JENNIE (STAFFORD) ’94, participated in the ESPN National Golf Challenge National Finals Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. on Nov. 15 and 16. The two-day, two-man best-ball tournament was sponsored by ESPN, Callaway Golf and Mandalay Bay and was aired on ESPN2 on Dec. 17.

MARGARET ANNE HITE ’93 is a teacher at Baumholder High School in Kusel, Germany.

CHRISTINA DRISCOLL ’95 is the administrator of The Ballentine, an assisted living facility in Norfolk, Va.

Kelsey Grammer’s company, Gramnet, along with Paramount Pictures recently bought the life rights of SARAH (RUTHERFORD) SMILEY ’95 and are developing a half-hour sitcom for CBS based on her recent book, Going Overboard and her nationallysyndicated newspaper column. She has been hired as a consultant for the project for two years. In the past year, she has been featured in The New York Times and Newsweek and on CBS’s “The Early Show,” “Nightline,” Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. JOHN LOCKERBY ’96 is the Assistant Village Manager for Skokie, Ill.

APRIL HAND-CAMERON ’98 recently received an invitation for membership to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the premier all-discipline honor society at Owen Michael Sauvager Old Dominion University. Students chosen for this honor must be selected from the top 10% of all enrolled graduate and professional students and promote superior scholarship.

JOSEPHINE FRANZESE ’98 and ADAM MOSKOWITZ ’98 (married in 2004) graduated on the same day for the second time in their lives on May 24. Josephine earned a Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Adam earned an MBA in Marketing from Pace University in Manhattan. Josephine will begin a general practice residency program at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Conn., while Adam will maintain his position as marketing manager for Signature Bank in Manhattan. The couple marked their graduation with a move to Ridgefield, Conn. in late May.

GIORGIO C. VALENTINI ’98 is a communications design specialist for CCG Systems, Inc., a fleet business software design company based in Norfolk, Va. He is also the owner and art director for Genesis Graphic Design, a freelance commercial advertising design company in Virginia Beach, Va.

2000s

SPENCER BAIRD ’00 recently accepted a promotion with Dannon Co., moving to their U.S. headquarters in White Plains, N.Y., as Senior Manager of Corporate Category Management focused on their U.S. dairy business.

KRISTINA KELLEY ’00 is a marketing analyst with ABNB Federal Credit Union in Chesapeake, Va.

MIKE DAILEY ’01 is a counselor and opera singer in Virginia Beach, Va. This summer he will be in Charlottesville, Va., at the Ashlawn Opera Festival doing his first professional role as Camille in “The Merry Widow.” He has also played Melot in the opera “Tristan and Isolde.”

DEBORAH DELORME ’01 was recently named Teacher of the Year. Deborah teaches math at Greenbrier Middle School in Chesapeake, Va.

KELLY EVANS ’01 is an Instructional Services Librarian at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. She received her Master of Library Science from Indiana University-Bloomington, Ind. in 2004.

ERIN HEISCHOBER ’01 is a marketing coordinator for www.Homes.com, one of the nation’s top online consumer destinations for real estate listings.

JACOB PLETT ’01 is a Behavioral Therapist for The Mentor Network in Moorestown, N.J. He also supervises State Inspections for the Quality Assurance Department.

KELLY (RUST) FISHER ’02 is a specialist in the Management and Organizational Department of Philip Morris USA.

DEBORAH (HAITHCOCK) AYLESWORTH ’02 and her husband opened a gourmet shop, Grape & Gourmet, in February. Their business is located in Virginia Beach, Va.

MONICA MAPP ’03 is a senior case worker for Homes for Hope, Inc. She resides in Hayettsville, Md.

HEATHER CAMPBELL ’04 is a therapeutic recreation specialist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, D.C. She resides in Arlington, Va.

MAE GREEN ’04 received a Master of Arts degree from Old Dominion University in English.

NICOLE M. KNIGHT ’05 joined the Creative Marketing team at Regent University in May 2005 and was promoted to Junior Print/Web Designer.

LYNN LOCKWOOD’05 is the administrative assistant to the general office manager and the executive assistant at Lantek Corp, an electronics component distributor in New Jersey.

VIVIAN “RIP” SHARP ’05 is a first-year teacher in special education at Campostella Elementary School in Norfolk, Va. She was recommended by central office school administrators to go to a conference in Utah that focuses on promoting collaboration between special education and general education teachers.

ANDY WISSINGER ’05 is an assistant baseball coach at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.

PAUL PAVON ’06 and his band, Fall of Transition, were named best group in the pop/rock category by Ninevolt Magazine.

BOB SCHNEIDWIND, ACT Program alumnus, was featured in the Beacon section of the Virginian- Pilot on March 12. He is now teaching kindergarten at Luxford Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Va.

In Memoriam

WILLIAM A. “BILL” KLYVER ’72 passed away on May 27, in his home after a 10-year battle with cancer. Bill was a History and Political Science major at Virginia Wesleyan, and was the owner of B&T Outboard Service. He lived with his wife of 34 years, Ruth Anna Hurtt, in Moyock, N.C.

STEPHEN E. STEINHILBER ’73 passed away on Dec. 2. Stephen, a former member of the National Guard, was a successful restaurateur who had recently retired from his family’s business in Steinhilber’s restaurant. Stephen was a history and political science major.

ELOY DAVID “ROCKY” NAJERA ’76 passed away on April 16, 2006 after a battle with cancer. Rocky was born and raised in Delan, Calif., and spent four years in the U.S. Navy before coming to Virginia Wesleyan. He graduated in 1976 with a degree in English and went on to teach English for 16 years at Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach. Rocky was married to DIANE (CRANDELL) NAJERA ’72.

DONNA MARIE FOOS ’84 passed away Jan. 12, at DePaul Medical Center. Donna was a religious studies major at Virginia Wesleyan and dedicated her life to work in humanitarian endeavors, in social services on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, as pastor in The United Methodist Church, as development associate at The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and, the past seven years, a database administrator at the Southeastern Chapter of the Red Cross.

BILL GARNER ’94 passed away Jan. 10, after a six and- a-half-year battle with cancer. Bill was a LAMP major whose careers spanned from multiple managerial positions in banking including CEO and president of the Bank of Powhatan (Powhatan, Va.) through director of human resources and learning and development at TCI Cable and AT&T Broadband. Bill spent 20 years in the banking industry before returning to school at Virginia Wesleyan full-time to finish his degree.

MARGARET STENGEL ’94 passed away March 3, 2005. Margaret was a health and human services major and lived in Walnut Grove, Mo.

VERNONDA O. BAKER ’95 passed away on May 16. After graduating from Virginia Wesleyan with a LAMP degree, Vernonda went on to earn a Master of Arts degree from George Washington University. From there, she began a career at Vepco in Gloucester, Va., after which she worked in the human resources department at Virginia Natural Gas in Newport News, Va., and then in Norfolk, Va. Vernonda lived in Chesapeake, Va.

RALPH GOODWIN ROOP passed away Jan. 21, at the age of 90. Ralph was a trustee of Virginia Wesleyan College from October 1982 to October 2004, when he was elected to the Emeritus status.
