By Heather Templeton '10

For some students, the idea of attending a four-year college immediately after completing high school seems daunting.

If you've attended a Virginia Community College you are eligible for guaranteed admission to Virginia Wesleyan. Contact your admissions counselor for more details. To continue their education, students have the option of attending a community college and then transferring to a four-year college, allowing them the opportunity to adjust to college classes and find their career interests. Virginia Wesleyan welcomes these students and is committed to helping them succeed.

Virginia Wesleyan understands that transfer students lead busy lives. Not only students, they are also employees, parents and spouses. And, since transfer students already have college credits, they're one step close to a bachelor's degree with Virginia Wesleyan's generous policy for accepting previous college course credits.

Two students, Antoinette "Toni" Montella and Matt Sherman, transferred to Virginia Wesleyan College. Both will graduate in May 2009, and have found success at Virginia Wesleyan.

Toni Montella
ANTOINETTE “TONI” MONTELLA

Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.
Transferred from: Tidewater Community College
Major: Interdivisional Major, Elementary Education
Why she chose Virginia Wesleyan: "I really just liked the way it sounded. 'Virginia Wesleyan' - it sounded perfect for me."
Why she transferred: "I was stuck because I didn't know what I wanted to do. I don't think I could have handled coming straight to a four-year school very well. Going to community college first was much more independent and I would advise any student to do so."
How has Virginia Wesleyan helped you? "The education department is the best. I thank the professors who saw what I wanted to do and worked with me to get me there."
Campus involvement: Works in the Learning Resource Center
Post graduation plans: To teach first or fifth grade for about five years before pursuing a master's degree in Juvenile Domestic Counseling
Career Goals: To become a juvenile domestic counselor

Matt Sherman
MATT SHERMAN

Hometown: Gloversville, N.Y.
Transferred from: Fulton Montgomery Community College
Major: Sociology
Why he chose Virginia Wesleyan: "I came to Virginia Wesleyan because I was sick of shoveling snow. Virginia Wesleyan was a school in Virginia and was close to my brother who was in the Navy at the Portsmouth Navel ship yard, aboard the USS Georgia."
How has Virginia Wesleyan helped you? "Virginia Wesleyan is a great school with caring teachers that are more than willing to go out of their way to help you. Virginia Wesleyan is a small school, but has big things to offer."
Campus involvement: Member of the men's cross country and track team
Post graduation plans: To pursue a master's degree
Career Goals: To become a teacher and elementary school counselor
