A new tradition begins this year as Virginia Wesleyan unveils the Official Virginia Wesleyan Ring Collection.
The unveiling will be held on Monday, Feb. 26, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Marlin Grille, Jane P. Batten Student Center. For those who attend the unveiling there will be gifts and prizes, including a certificate for 50% off a ring for a student who is either a junior or a senior.
"Many well-respected and established universities have had an official college ring collection for many years," said Beth Clarke '98, Director of Alumni Relations. "The tradition of obtaining the ring is proudly celebrated by students and alumni. Virginia Wesleyan students and alumni deserve the same lasting reminder of their experience at Wesleyan."
Representatives from Balfour Rings will also be on campus Tuesday, Feb. 27 through Thursday, March 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. by the aquarium in the Batten Student Center and Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Adult Studies Lounge in Clarke Hall.
The rings will be available in variety of men's and women's styles, as determined by student leaders from the Student Government Association.
"The ring collection promotes college unity," said Nate Swann, SGA President. "While the student body is diverse and each individual is unique, the rings represent a common tie to Virginia Wesleyan."
On the front of the ring will be the Official College Seal, which was approved by the Board of Trustees in 1962. It features the Cross of Christ and the letters "V" and "W" to identify Virginia Wesleyan.
"Students will still have the option of selecting their ring and personalizing it with their major, Greek letters, etc." said Clarke. "However, it will just be a more select group of official college rings from which the students can choose."
Men who select the traditional ring style can choose to have either a faceted or smooth stone, with one side depicting the school seal, while the
other displays the student's academic discipline. Women can select the Signature ring, which features a smooth stone with two small diamonds. One side can display the degree letters and year, while the other depicts the student's academic discipline. Options for a different style are available.
Signet and Legend rings are also available to both men and women. The Signet ring depicts the school's seal on top. Options for the Signet ring are the student's graduation year and degree letters or Greek letters on the sides. The Legend ring depicts the school seal on one side, while the other side depicts the academic discipline. It also features a smooth stone.
Students can select from 10K, 14K or 18K yellow or white gold, and can even have a personalized engraving of a name or initials up to 18 characters on the inside of the ring.
Rings will be presented to students at the Official Ring Ceremony on Saturday, April 28. Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony, where family and friends can witness students receiving their ring.
Alumni are also invited to purchase rings from the collection by visiting with a representative during one of the dates mentioned above or by contacting the Scribner Bookstore at 757.455.3275.
