Hofheimer Library adds Laptop Lounge

Addition is the latest change in pursuit of Phi Beta Kappa.

Sometimes a dorm room isn't always the best place for inspiration, peace or studying.

Think about it – There's always some kind of music playing, students chattering about and the constant banging and clicking of doors as they are opened and shut.

To give students and faculty a quiet, comfortable and user-friendly place, the Hofheimer Library created a Laptop Lounge this fall, located on the second floor of the library in the back of the Computer Lab.

The addition is the latest change to the library which is undergoing modernization as part of the College's pursuit of Phi Beta Kappa. Future plans for the library include a 24-hour study lounge, a technology classroom and addition of 50,000 volumes – all a vital part of the Key to the Future Campaign which was publicly announced in September 2006.

Nichelle Mack, library assistant for cataloging, is the creator of the Laptop Lounge. Mack says the idea came to her one day when she noticed there was a big space in the library that was never occupied.

"I kept seeing a growing number of students bring their laptops into the library to work," said Mack. "So I proposed that space be used as a place where students can get together and use their laptops."

Freshman Errin Carter from Hampton, Va., has used the Laptop Lounge several times since it became available for use this fall. "I think it's a really good idea and I've brought my laptop in many times," she said.

Mack is extremely pleased with the number of students utilizing the newest area of the library.  She hopes that students will continue to use the space, and small groups such as clubs and committees are encouraged to take advantage of the Laptop Lounge.
