Welcome back to Wesleyan!

As the 2006-07 academic year begins at Virginia Wesleyan, there are a number of things happening on campus and a number of key things of which students, faculty and staff should be aware. Following is information on bookstore hours, classes and registration, on-campus events, athletic season openers and dining hours.

Back to the books!

Scribner Bookstore will be open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Aug. 25. Starting on Monday, Aug. 28, the Bookstore will be open until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 757.455.3241.

Classes and registration

Classes begin on Monday, Aug. 28. Students can access their fall schedules through the Marlin Student Information System (MARSIS). Visit MARSIS by clicking the MARSIS link at the top of any page on the College Web site.

Changes to fall schedules can be made through Friday, Aug. 25 with only the adviser’s signature unless consent is required or the class is full. Once classes begin, instructors' signatures and the adviser's signature are required for registration or add/drop. Add/drop forms are available in the Registrar's office in Clarke Hall.

Also, note important dates throughout the semester on the Academic Calendar for 2006-07.

No time to be bored!

The Wesleyan Activities Council (WAC) has a number of events planned for the first week of classes. All WAC events are free to students. For more information about WAC events, e-mail wac@vwc.edu or call the WAC office at x8726 (233- prefix from off campus).

*In case of rain, the TGIF Welcome Back Party and VWC and Beyond Disco Dance Party events will be held in the C-MAC in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

Also, the Fall Honor Convocation will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31 in the Convocation Hall of the Jane P. Batten Student Center. Dr. Lynn Sawlivich, assistant professor of Classics, presents "Inquiry and the Liberal Arts." All students, faculty and staff members are encouraged to attend.

Fear the Fish!

Marlin Athletics kick off the 2006 fall season this week! Marlin logo

The Marlin volleyball team will host the Wingate INNvitational, facing North Carolina Wesleyan College at 3 p.m. and Thomas More College at 7 p.m. on Friday and Meredith College at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The women's soccer team, which begins the season ranked in the nation's top 20, kick off the season at home against fifth-ranked Oneonta State University at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 at Foster Field. The Marlins will also host the No. 1 team in the nation – Messiah College – at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Marlin cross country opens the season at home with the Marlin Invitational at 10 a.m. on Saturday, where they will host teams from Bridgewater, Guilford, Hampden-Sydney and Lynchburg.

Men's soccer plays its first home game on Saturday, Sept. 9 versus Piedmont College and the field hockey Marlins' home opener will be played against Roanoke College on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Grab a bite

The first meal served for returning students will be dinner on Sunday, Aug. 27. The dining hall will be open from 5-6 p.m.

The first meal served for freshman students will be lunch on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Boyd Dining Hall will begin normal operating hours on Monday, Aug. 28. The weekly schedule is as follows:

Monday through Thursday:
Breakfast: 7:30-9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 10:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Dinner: 5-7 p.m.

Friday:
Breakfast: 7:30-9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 10:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Dinner: 5-6 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday:
Brunch: 10:45 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Dinner: 5-6 p.m.

The Marlin Restaurant, also known as the Grille, will begin normal hours on Monday, Aug. 28. Grille hours are as follows:

Monday through Thursday:
8:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Friday:
8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday:
Closed.

Allowance (formerly known as "equivalency") hours in the Grille are:
Lunch: 1:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Dinner: 6:30 - 8 p.m
