This fall there will be a new governing body in charge of campus events. The Wesleyan Activities Council (WAC) has taken charge of planning, promoting and hosting a number of on- and off-campus events for students.
Formerly, clubs and organizations had been largely responsible for their own events; this fall however, that will no longer be the case.
The process began in February with a proposal put together by Kristen Whalen, Assistant Dean of Students for Student Activities and Greek Life, and Lina Green, Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Batten Center. The Board of Trustees approved the proposal that spring and went on to determine how much the Student Activities Fee would be for the fall semester.
Whalen began to spread the word about WAC in February in order to get students to apply. All Honors and Scholars and Portfolio students were invited to join, as well as a number of students recommended by faculty members and members of the Athletic department. Following interviews, Whalen sat down with Green and Dean of Students David Buckingham to review and select students.
Currently, the WAC consists of an executive board comprised of a president (Mimi Mitchell) and vice president (Nate Swann) as well as two directors for each of the five committees.
The five committees are: Traditions, TGIF, VWC and Beyond, Main Stage and ICE. The Traditions committee deals with promoting and establishing Wesleyan traditions, such as Mud Games and the Lake Taylor Music Festival. TGIF is responsible for a number of Friday night fun events, such as the Welcome Back night for students. VWC and Beyond holds recreation events on campus in partnership with Campus Recreation as well as social events off campus, such as concerts. Main stage is responsible for the more expensive programs held on campus like bands and comedians. ICE – the Intercultural, Cultural and Educational committee – will sponsor a variety of events, including a trip to the opera, a Native American festival and events dealing with interracial issues.
Each committee contains between ten and 15 students.
“The committee piece is where students really have a voice,” Whalen said. “This is their chance to express ideas of things they want to do.”
The WAC has finalized a fall schedule of events, in which there are events planned for every Friday and Saturday throughout the semester with the exception of fall break.
Admission to and participation in events is free to students. Students will also receive a coupon book, which contains a coupon for each fall WAC event and entitles students to things like half-priced admission for one guest. In addition, students can use the coupons for the chance to enter drawings to win a number of prizes, including an iPod, Xbox or tickets to a Coldplay concert. In addition, prizes such as MTV hoodies, T-shirts and CDs will be available during the MTV Real World event.
One of the events planned for the fall semester is a special showing of the newest Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The WAC has rented out an AMC Lynnhaven 18 movie theater in Virginia Beach and will be admitting students to a private first showing of the film at midnight on Thursday, November 17. In addition to admission, students will receive a free popcorn and drink.
Other scheduled events include two big-screen drive-in movies on the lawn, Mud Games, MTV Real World, Money Tree Game Show, Salsa Magic & Cultural Cooking, Spa a la Marlin, Comedy Club, Karaoke Dance Party, Dodgeball Tournament, Laser Tag, Pub Night, Foam Dance Party, Relay for Life, Lively in the Ivy, Spring Fling and more.
The WAC Hotline can be reached at x8765 (233- prefix from off campus) and will be updated every Sunday night following the WAC executive board meetings.
