A great way for adult students to visit Virginia Wesleyan is to attend "Going to College with the Adult Studies Program" at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 in the Adult Studies Lounge in Clarke Hall.
The free, information-packed session will provide advice on how to make going to college a reality, instead of a dream.
The Adult Studies Program is an extension of the day program at Virginia Wesleyan with night and weekend classes designed specifically for adults who are degree-seeking or looking to change careers. The program offers targeted courses needed to sharpen the skills of the average worker and entire course plans to work toward a full undergraduate degree.
The Adult Studies program offers bachelor’s degrees in management (through the Liberal Arts Management Program), social science (with a concentration in psychology or sociology), criminal justice, history, education and liberal studies (a broad major focused on the humanities and social sciences). Teacher certification is also available. Students can enroll as non-degree or degree-seeking students or may opt to audit a course. A built-in Adult Incentive Grant makes credit courses 60% less expensive than Virginia Wesleyan's day program rates. A variety of other financial programs are available to make Virginia Wesleyan a very affordable choice.
The information session will cover topics such as how to succeed in college, affording education, credit transfers and how to enroll.
"We realize that many adults have questions about things like making a choice, when to start, when does it make sense to go back to school, what it takes to go back to school and what would be the best choice of institution for them," said Dr. Rich Hoehlein, director of the Adult Studies Program. "Questions like, 'How do I know that I’m ready and I’ll be in a good position for success?' This session is to help give them answers to those types of questions and introduce them to the resources that Virginia Wesleyan has to support them as adult learners."
