The Student Government Association, the Wesleyan Activities Council, Student Affairs, the Alumni Relations Office and the Virginia Wesleyan Alumni Association join forces to present Homecoming 2005 Thursday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 9.
The slate of events for the weekend includes a Homecoming parade, air band contest, bonfire, art exhibit, tailgate party, class of 1970 35-year reunion and homecoming dance as well as Greek reunions and a host of athletic events.
The weekend kicks off for students with the on-campus Homecoming Parade at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Sponsored by SGA and WAC, the parade will begin at Godwin Hall and will run through campus and will feature golf cart floats for each class as well as various clubs and organizations.
“As of right now we have 33 entries in the parade,” said Lina Green, associate dean of students. “Larry Hultgren will be the parade grand marshal, Bob Marlin will make a big Macy’s Parade-type entrance in the back of the RecX van and the Homecoming court will be on the back of motorcycles.” Clubs and organizations also have the opportunity to win a $500 prize from SGA for the best entry.
Friday will feature a Red Carpet Dinner for students in the Boyd Dining Center followed by the Air Band Contest. The winner will be announced at halftime of the women’s soccer game versus the visiting Vixens of Sweet Briar College at 7 p.m. Friday night at Foster Field. Additionally, there will be a bonfire immediately following the game in the baseball field parking lot.
Marlin sports teams will compete throughout the weekend. The women’s volleyball team (12-5 and a current tri-leader in the ODAC) will host the Virginia Wesleyan La Quinta INNvitational Volleyball Tournament Friday and Saturday in the Convocation Center of the Jane P. Batten Student Center. The field hockey team (8-2) will take on Bridgewater College at 2 p.m. Saturday and St. Mary’s College at 1 p.m. Sunday at Marlins Field. The men’s soccer team (7-3, No. 1 in the ODAC and No. 6 in the South Region) will face ODAC rival Hampden-Sydney College at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The women’s soccer team (10-0-1, No. 2 in the South Region and No. 8 nationally) will face Sweet Briar College on Friday and the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. All soccer matches will be played at Foster Field. The Homecoming Court will be announced at halftime of the men’s soccer game on Saturday.
During Saturday’s competitions, the All-American Tailgate Party will take place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Trinder Center area. Complete with a beer tent as well as music and food, the event will feature a clown and other activities for children as well as a moon bounce and surf simulator. Tailgate reunions will also be held Saturday for Phi Sigma Sigma, Epsilon Sigma chapter, Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and members of the class of 1970.
In addition, baseball will play an intra-squad game at 9 a.m. Saturday, as will softball at 10 a.m. The men’s lacrosse team will challenge their alumni at 11 a.m. Saturday at Foster Field.
Saturday will also feature coffee and donuts at the exhibit of “Rock and Roll Cubism: Paintings by Larry Horvath” from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Hofheimer Library Gallery. Horvath, husband of alumnus Dell Young ’79, has resided in Virginia Beach since 1975 and studied painting and drawing at the University of Virginia and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Saturday night, all students and alumni are invited to attend the annual Homecoming Dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The Homecoming Court will be announced, and the king and queen will be crowned. For tickets, call Lina Green at 757.455.3346.
Also on Saturday, “A 1st Class Affair,” the Class of 1970 35-Year Reunion will begin with a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Barclay Sheaks Art Gallery in Godwin Hall and will continue with a Reunion Dinner and Program from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Hospitality Suite of the Jane P.
