VWC and Local Schools Celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Virginia Wesleyan College, in partnership with Virginia Beach City Public Schools, hosts "20 Jahre Mauerfall: Freedom Without Wall," celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Monday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Events for the day include presentations from witnesses from the era and representatives from NATO, competitions, games and the Tearing Down of the Wall, with live media connection to Berlin. Kelly Jackson '84
Kelly Jackson '84 is Director of the WHRO Center for Regional Citizenship. The Center is a multi-platform initiative that utilizes TV, radio, the web and outreach to engage the community in discussion of local interests. Before joining WHRO in 2005, Kelly spent 17 years at Virginia Wesleyan College, where she served for ten years in the Admissions Office before moving to the College's Center for the Study of Religious Freedom.
Kelly just completed a two-year Obici Healthcare Foundation grant to address childhood obesity within the early care and elementary school environments in Obici's service area of Western Tidewater. She is halfway through a two-year Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to work with faith communities to advocate for policies that will increase children's access to healthy foods and safe places to play.
Kelly serves on the board of the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (formerly known as the National Conference for Community and Justice). She is a member of the Smart Beginnings of South Hampton Roads Public Engagement Task Force and is active with the Consortium for Child and Infant Health. |

Mandy (Bryant) Schuchhardt (2002) received a MS Ed. in Special Education from Old Dominion University on August 28, 2009.
Victoria (Lowell) Walker (1994) received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education with majors in Research and Institutional Planning and Distance Education from Regent University's School of Education May 2009. She was awarded the Outstanding Ph.D. Graduate Award.
Rob Gillikin (2000) and Courtney (Fox) Gillikin (2001) are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl, Eleanor Louise. She was born on July 19, 2009 in Norfolk, and weighed 8 lb., 4 oz.. Eleanor joins big sister Madeleine (2 years old).
MSA, P.C. recently welcomed Rebecca Desjardins (class of 2003) as Marketing Coordinator, creating a two-person marketing team at its Virginia Beach location. Desjardins, a Virginia Beach resident, comes to MSA from Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Va., where she worked for six years in the Office of College Communications, most recently serving as Executive Director, chief communications officer for the College. A 2003 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications (journalism and media studies), Desjardins brings to MSA experience in a variety of communications specialties, including writing, marketing, public relations, media relations, and internal and external communications. As Marketing Coordinator at MSA, reporting to the Marketing Director, her main responsibilities will be in business development, preparing proposals and statements of qualification in response to Requests for Proposals published by public agencies and private sector companies, and other public relations and marketing tasks. MSA, P.C. is a regional consulting firm established in 1973 with offices in Hampton Roads and Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The firm specializes in environmental sciences, planning, surveying, civil and environmental engineering, and landscape architecture for public and private projects.
Chad Longe (1999) and Colleen are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl, Caroline Rita. She was born on September 2, 2009 in Atlanta, and weighed 7 lb., 0 oz.. Caroline joins big brother Luis (8) and big sister Juliette (4). Everyone is doing great.
