Students solve two problems at Collegiate Programming Contest
Raichel Link '09 from Charleston, S.C.; Brandon Mohawk '10 from Virginia Beach, Va.; and David Weirich '09 from Portsmouth, Va.; solved two programming problems and also submitted partial solutions to two additional problems, the best showing yet for a Virginia Wesleyan team. The team was coached by Visiting Instructor of Computer Science/Mathematics Kathy Ames.

Still accepting applications for spring 2009
Virginia Wesleyan is still accepting applications for the spring 2009 semester.  If you're thinking of attending Virginia Wesleyan summer or fall 2009, check us out by attending a VWC Day open house. Offered three times each year in the fall, winter and spring, VWC Days are a great opportunity to tour campus, meet faculty members and attend campus events. The next VWC Day is Saturday, Jan. 31. Going to College with the Adult Studies Program
Looking for a career change, or do you know someone who is? Visit Virginia Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4 in Clarke Hall for an informational session specifically for adults. This session will cover topics such as degree programs offered, tips for success, support available for non-traditional students, credit transfers, guaranteed admission for Virginia community college students, employer tuition deferral programs, financial aid options and how to enroll. Tony Echea

Tony Echea '92

Tony Echea '92 is President of Monarch Building. He is a Class A licensed builder specializing in custom home building and additions, commercial and residential remodeling, architectural drawings, engineering reports, structural reinforcing and stabilization, in-law suites, detached structures, and concrete scapes. He is a member of Tidewater Builders Association. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, Va., Tony attended St. Gregory's School and then Kempsville High School where he played soccer. He was also a member of the soccer team at Virginia Wesleyan. He and his wife, Jenn, have two children, Caroline, 8, and Ross, 6. In his free time, Tony coaches youth soccer and enjoys football, skiing and traveling.

Loss of former Alumni Director
Kevin Lee Clary '84 died unexpectedly at his home, Friday, Oct. 10. Kevin was a former employee of the College, serving as the director of alumni relations for nine years and prior to that position as an admissions counselor. To honor Kevin's memory, the Kevin L. Clary Endowed Scholarship has been established and will benefit Virginia Wesleyan students. Friends may make a contribution to Kevin L. Clary Endowed Scholarship, Virginia Wesleyan College, 1584 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502. Gifts will be matched by the Frank E. Brown Challenge. More

Caught in the spotlight! Alumni volunteer on campus
Elizabeth Martin '06 participated in a panel session entitled "Careers in Environmental Science," representing the First Landing Foundation where she works as an archaeologist. Bryan Pennington '98, executive assistant to the Mayor of the City of Norfolk, has been working with the American Politics Living & Learning Community this fall. Senator Richard Stuart '89 spoke to the American Politics Living & Learning Community class about his role as a State Senator in the General Assembly. Class Notes

Jennifer (Bender) Knop (1998) and William Knop are proud to announce the birth of a baby boy, Alexander Wills Knop. He was born on September 3, 2008 and weighed 8 lb., 4 oz.

Bryan Pennington (1998) has been instrumental to the success of Virginia Wesleyan's American Politics Living & Learning Community throughout the fall semester. He has provided valuable expertise from his role as Executive Assistant to the Mayor for the City of Norfolk and, more recently, appointed as the Director of Intergovernmental Relations. The 14 freshmen participating in this new academic program have used Norfolk as a case study in their First Year Seminar to analyze the role of local governments and services of provided to its citizens. Bryan has contributed to their class experience as a lecturer, resource guide and host at City Council.

Giorgio C. Valentini (1998) was promoted to Marketing and Artistic Administrator for CONCOA, a manufacturing company which specializes in products, applications and instrumentation for the gas flow control industry. The company, headquartered in Virginia Beach,VA, has satellite offices in Peru and Malaysia, as well as a European assembly plant in the Netherlands. As the company's art director, Giorgio is responsible for the company's branding and corporate visual marketing.

Bladen Finch (2003)has been named Civics Coordinator for the Senate of Virginia in Richmond. He looks forward to working on some new and exciting projects!

Elizabeth Martin (2006) recently participated in a panel session at VWC sponsored by Career Services. The session was titled "Careers in Environmental Science". Panelists gave students advice and gave testament to the different career paths that Environmental Science can lead to. Liz represented the First Landing Foundation where she works as an archaeologist who is contracted to the US Army. Fellow panelists included representatives from Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Keep Norfolk Beautiful and the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center.
