We Remember Professor Robert "Beau" Cass
Robert "Beau" Cass, professor of management/business/economics, died Saturday, April 19. He retired from college teaching in February 2008 due to illness, and fought a seven-month courageous battle against lung cancer.

Office of Community Service receives Volunteer Award

Virginia Wesleyan volunteers contributed a total of 7,671 hours of service from September 2006 - May 2007 and were recognized with a 2008 Volunteer Hampton Roads Achievement Award in the Community Group category.

Athletic Hall of Fame Established
Now accepting nominations! An Athletic Hall of Fame has been established to honor those who, by outstanding achievement, service or significant contributions to athletics, have made lasting contributions to Virginia Wesleyan's intercollegiate athletic program. The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for the inaugural class through August 2008. Those inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame will be permanently recognized in the Athletic Hall of Fame installation, which will be located adjacent to the entrance of the Jane P. Batten Student Center. Make a nomination online.

Students receive VFIC awards for Undergraduate Research
Suzie Lazarowitz '09 will travel to Trinidad this summer and Katherine Burchett '09 will examine the role of semiaquatic turtles in lake nutrient cycles. Read more.


Adult Studies Program awards Academic Achievement Award
The Adult Studies Program has awarded its Academic Achievement Award, which honors the ASP student with the highest cumulative grade point average, to two students who have identical GPAs of 3.79. Award recipients were Apple Rhose Aclan De Ocampo and Robert Smith. Congratulations to these students.

Annual Fund for Academic Excellence
The Annual Fund for Academic Excellence promotes the development of our future leaders. Through its support of scholarships, technology upgrades and additions, undergraduate research, faculty recruitment and retention and critical needs as they arise on campus, the Annual Fund provides the margin of excellence for all Wesleyan students. Clair T. Berube '83

Clair T. Berube '83

Clair T. Berube '83 is assistant professor of education at Hampton University in Hampton, Va., where she teaches science education, human growth and development, research and general education courses. She is the author of a soon-to-be-released book, The Unfinished Quest, the Plight of Progressive Science Education in the Age of Standards, which discusses the fate of science education during the era of high-stakes testing and No Child Left Behind. Clair received a Masters and Ph.D in education from Old Dominion University (ODU) and taught at ODU, Wagner College and The College of Staten Island in New York City. The mother of four children, Clair's youngest son Johnny, age 6, has autism. Clair reports he is doing wonderfully well in school and is the inspiration for much of her work in education.

8th Annual Alumni Association Auction & Party takes Endowed Legacy Scholarship over $100,000
Held Friday, April 18, more than 120 Virginia Wesleyan alumni, family and friends enjoyed a night of food, music and fellowship while purchasing auction items. Proceeds from this event benefit the Alumni Association's Legacy Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded each year to a child of a VWC alumnus. If you missed the event and would like to support the Alumni Association, check out the auction items still up for bid. Hurry, as bidding ends midnight on Monday, May 19.

It's that time of year again...mark your calendars for another Wesleyan Wednesday, an annual summertime tradition! It's never too early to make plans for Homecoming & Family Weekend 2008, held Oct. 3-5 on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College. The Alumni Tailgate is back again, and the Classes of 1998 and 1983 will be celebrating their 10- and 25-year reunions respectively. Keep an eye on your mailboxes for more details! Laura (Schultz) Chinnici (1990) has been accepted to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Social Work, graduate program. She will begin graduate classes in clinical social work in fall '08."

Christine (Kincade) Whitman (2000) and Brad Whitman are proud to announce the birth of a baby girl, Abigail Grace. She was born on May 7, 2008 in the Bronx, NY, and weighed 9 lb., 1 oz. The family resides in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Kelly (Holland) Buffaloe (2003) was named the Public Relation Student Society of America (PRSSA)Student of the Year by the Mass Communication and Journalism Department at Norfolk State University on April 3, 2008.

Joshua Lampman (2005) writes, "I'm going to be having my Masters of Art in Digital Art gallery opening and performance at MICA May 9th. It is on the 3rd floor of the Fox building. The reception begins at 5, and my performance will being at 7:00. Paul Wolfe (2007) writes, "I was nominated for "Soldier of the Cylcle" at Ft. Benning. There were 4 soldiers nominated from his class of 237 men. I qualified "Expert" in both the M16A2 rifle and the grenade."
