Marriages and Births

  • Donna '92 and Howard '91 Van Duyne, welcomed their fourth child, Keturah Van Duyne (pictured), 6
    Hope Van Duyne holding Keturah Grace
    pounds 15 ounces on June 28. Keturah joins big sister Hope, and big brothers, Jair and Simeon. The family resides in Sodus, N.Y.
  • Courtney (Fox) Gillikin '01 and her husband, Rob Gillikin '00, welcomed a daughter, Madeleine Harper Gillikin, 7 pounds 11 ounces on May 4. The family resides in Pittsburgh, Pa.
  • Brandy Lee (Frazier) McNamee '02 (pictured) married Seamus Christopher McNamee on March 17 at the

    Renaissance Waterfront Hotel in Portsmouth, Va. Other Virginia Wesleyan alumni participating in the wedding were Candice Brownmiller '03and Rebecca Desjardins' 03. David Schwartz '92 was the wedding photographer.
  • Patrick McMahon '02 married Aarynn Wilson on June 23 on the grounds of the Hermitage Foundation in Norfolk, Va. Patrick is currently employed with American Funds in Norfolk, Va.

  • John Shappell '70 is the pastor at First United Methodist Church in Norfolk, Va.
  • Linda Byrd '71 has retired after working for more than 10 years as a college administrator and 15 years as a cost analyst for a manufacturing firm. At her church, she serves at the altar as a Eucharistic Minister and she takes communion to the housebound. Byrd resides in Signal Mountain, Tenn.
  • Robin Davenport '74 is the principal at Creeds Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Va. He resides in Virginia Beach, Va.
  • Keary Kincannon '75, founding pastor of Hope Rising, was named a recipient of the Society of John Wesley Award of Merit.
  • Jim Earley '77 is the pastor at Walker United Methodist Church in Arlington, Va.
  • Maria Hudome '78 received her M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. She is the Training Manager in Sales for Marriott International in Northern Ireland.
  • Mike Evans '81 is the principal at Denbigh High School in Newport News, Va.,which was recently honored by the College Board with the 2007 Inspiration Award for the most improved high school academically despite social, economical and social changes.
  • Charles Shumate '83 is the pastor at Haygood United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Va.
  • Theodore Smith '84 is the pastor at Regester Chapel in Stafford, Va.
  • Bonnie Purefoy '87 has been named Vice President within SunTrust Banks Hampton Roads Retail Division.
  • Scott M. Rimer '89 has been elected President of the National Alumni Council for Duke University Divinity School. He serves as pastor of Larchmont United Methodist Church in Norfolk, Va.
  • Janet Adams '90 is the Senior Research Scientist for Tissue Technologies LLC in Richmond, Va.
  • John Bright '91 is the pastor at Walmsley Boulevard United Methodist Church in Richmond, Va.
  • John Martin '91 is the pastor at Lane Memorial United Methodist Church in Altavista, Va.
  • Phyllis (Ruckle) Earley '92 is the Program Coordinator for Walker United Methodist Church in Arlington, Va.
  • Pamela (Payne) Seeley '93 is the pastor for Bluxom, Guilford and St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Bloxom, Va.
  • Faith (Murcko) Weedling '94 is the pastor for Mt. Pleasant and South Covington United Methodist Church in Covington, Va.
  • Adam Blagg '95 is the pastor at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church in Churchill, Va.
  • James Trent Corbett '95 has been selected for the Joint Aeronautical Logistics Commanders Employee Development Program. He will be working at the Defense Contract Management Agency in Saint Augustine, Fla., as a Quality Engineer for one year.
  • Jennie Malone '95 received her Masters of Biomedical Science at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2003. In June she received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and will begin her residency in her home state of N.J. at UMDNJ – Stratford.
  • Ayron (Wood) Corbitt '96 has been appointed the American Cancer Society State Vice President for Kentucky. She has been with the American Cancer Society since 1997.
  • Marie Nicolo '96 retired from 31 years of working for the State of Virginia. She is now working as the Senior Administrative Assistant to the Director of Development for the City of Newport News.
  • William Setliff '99 is the pastor at Moseley Memorial-Stokesland Cooperative Parish in Danville, Va.
  • Jen Norton '01 is the Fitness and Sports Director for MWR at Barking Sands in Kauai, Hawaii.
  • Elizabeth (Goupie) Lutz '02 is the associate pastor at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News, Va.
  • Sarah McQueen '02 is the associate pastor at Warrenton United Methodist Church in Warrenton, Va.
  • Kristin Jones '03 is the AVID eighth grade English teacher at Salem Middle School in Virginia Beach, Va. She is also the Head Coach for the girls track and field team.
  • Janet Grissett '04 is the pastor for Drummondtown and Woodberry United Methodist Church in Accomac, Va.
  • Melissa (Smith) Benson '06 is a victim advocate with the Sojourner Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
  • William Blake '06 is a sales manager for The Virginian-Pilot newspaper. He resides in Chesapeake, Va.
  • Diler Ertug '06 is a journalist for the Cyprus Today, a national weekly newspaper in Turkey.
  • Kelly Baker '07 is a substitute teacher with Virginia Beach City Public Schools. She resides in Virginia Beach, Va.

In Memoriam

  • Herbert C. Flitton '99, passed away June 5 in Hampton, Va.  A LAMP major at Virginia Wesleyan, he was an engineer with Creasy Electronics for more than 20 years before his health forced him to retire.  He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va.
