The Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series offers opportunities for
the campus and local community to hear live performances by exceptional
musicians on the Virginia Wesleyan College campus.

Concerts take place in the Edward D. Hofheimer Theater located in the
campus Fine Arts building. Convenient, free parking is available next to
the Fine Arts building.
Tickets at a reduced price are available for elementary,
middle, and high school students, as well as students from
other colleges or universities with a valid student ID. Seniors
over the age of 60, as well as active duty military personnel
are also eligible for reduced ticket prices.

Laurie Baefsky + Friends

From 1989 - 2005, Laurie Baefsky played piccolo and flute as a member
of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra,and now performs with
the Utah Symphony and Tea & Sympathy, an ensemble for flute and Celtic
harp. Baefsky joins pianist Lee Jordan-Anders, and harpist
Barbara Chapman for a program of French music by Couperin,
Fauré, Debussy, Dutilleux, and Poulenc. |

Named after a luminous star-forming nebula, ETA-3 is a dynamic classical
trio. American flutist Emily Thomas, Japanese pianist
Tomoko Nakayamaand Russian clarinetist Alexey Gorokholinsky
form this fresh and exciting chamber ensemble, recognized
as one of three prominent emerging chamber music
groups of 2006 leading to their Alice Tully Hall
debut. |

Tomothy Olbrych

Classical Guitarist Timothy Olbrych has performed throughout the United
States in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings,
and as a featured performer on radio and television.
He is on the Artist Faculty at the College of William & Mary where
he teaches Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical guitar
performance. |

Cavani String Quartet

Winner of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the Cavani String
Quartet has been described by the Washington Post
as “completely engrossing, powerful and elegant.”
Cavani has been featured on NPR's Performance Today
and seen on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS television, as
well as earning top prizes in numerous competitions
including the Coleman, Fischoff, the Banff International, and the Cleveland
Quartet Competition, consistently winning the hearts of audiences across
the country with their soulful and riveting performances. |

Robert Jospé and Inner Rhythm

Jazz drummer, percussionist, and composer Robert Jospé fuses the buoyant
grooves of salsa, samba, swing, funk, and African
rhythms with modern acoustic jazz into a unique and
distinctive style. Jospé's jazz, fusion and Latin
ensemble, Inner Rhythm, features Jospé on drums,
Bob Hallahan on piano, Jeff Deckeron saxophone, Randall
Pharron bass, and Kevin Davison percussion, performing
original compositions with roots in jazz, rock, Afro-Cuban,
Caribbean and Brazilian styles.

Lee Jorda0 Anders, Batten Professor of Music and Artist-in-Residence
at Virginia Wesleyan, performs Ludwig Van Beethoven’s
Sonata in A Major, Opus 2/2; Sonata in C-sharp minor
“Moonlight,” Opus 27/2, Sonata in E Major, Opus 109.
Jordan Anders joined the Virginia Wesleyan music
faculty in 1986 after living in Europe for five years,
a period devoted to performing extensively as both
soloist and chamber musician. During the fall of
2005 she was a resident at La Cité Internationale
des Arts in Paris where she studied the music of
Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. Her second CD recording,
In A, was released in 2006. |

Sam Dorsey brings the world to Hofheimer Theatre
in a concert of folk and popular traditions. Dorsey
performs solo works by Sergio Assad and Ary Barroso
plus contemporary classics by Andrew York and Benjamin
Verdery, and a few from Paul Simon and Chick Corea
to round out the mix. Cellist Carter Melin joins
Dorsey in works by Gershwin and Jobim, and tenor
Robert Shoupjoins Dorsey in selections by Stephen
Foster. |

The Virginia Chamber Players, all principal members of the Virginia
Symphony Chorus, perform to critical acclaim wherever
they appear and are featured annually in the Virginia
Arts Festival. As a collaborating ensemble, they
have performed with artists Andre-Michel Schub, Richard
Stoltzman, and Nathaniel Rosen, and are heard frequently
on NPR's Performance Today. This concert showcases
rarely heard chamber works by Vaughan Williams, Bloch,
Jolivet, and Salzedo, and features Debra Wendells
Cross, flute, Beverly Kane Baker, viola, Barbara
Chapman, harp, and Charles Woodward, pianist. |

Philip Barker, mandolin, Jesse Langlais, banjo, Barrett
Smith, bass, and a surprise guest on fiddle. |

Yun Zhang

Associate Concertmaster of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Yun Zhang
presents Beethoven’s Sonata No. 5 in F Major, “Spring,”
Opus 24, Three Romances by Clara Schumann, and Franck’s
Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano. Zhang studied
at the renowned Shanghai Conservatory of Music, serving
as concert master of the Conservatory Orchestra,
and the same at the Civic Orchestra of Chicago before
joining the VSO. He is joined by collaborating pianist
Jeffrey Brown, winner of the Koscuszko Chopin Competition,
the Iowa International Piano Competition, and the
Eastman Concerto Competition; a few of his many achievements. |

Anders

Pianist Michael Manning’s professional life has encompassed academia,
journalism, scientific research, and software engineering
in addition to performance. He has served on college
and university faculties, as program director of
WGBH Radio, music critic for The Boston Globe, and
producer for NPR. He is joined by Virginia Wesleyan
Artist-in-Residence and Batten Professor of Music
Lee Jordan Anders in a program featuring Mozart’s
C minor Fantasy, K. 475,Schubert’s F minor Fantasy
for piano four hands, D. 940, and Schumann’s Fantasy
in C, Opus 17. |

Covington String Quartet & Frankenstein

Our national capitol’s famed string quartet brings Frankenstein to the
Virginia Wesleyan campus for an evening of music
and film. In addition to traditional string quartet
works by Rubenstein and Barber, the Covington String
Quartet performs an original work by Japanese composer
Yukiko Nishimura, created to accompany Thomas Edison’s
1910 silent film Frankenstein. |
