Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series

The Virginia Wesleyan College Concert Series offers opportunities for the campus and local community to hear live performances by exceptional musicians on the Virginia Wesleyan College campus.

Concerts take place in the Edward D. Hofheimer Theater located in the campus Fine Arts building. Convenient, free parking is available next to the Fine Arts building.

Tickets at a reduced price are available for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as students from other colleges or universities with a valid student ID. Seniors over the age of 60, as well as active duty military personnel are also eligible for reduced ticket prices

Carol Thomas

A rollicking evening of Celtic music with Carol Thomas Downing - fiddle, guitar and vocals, Susan Lawlor - flutes and tin whistles, and Kenny Phaup - flutes and bodhra, with special guest Martha Giles on hammered dulcimer.  A concert of lively jigs, reels, and hornpipes; all the traditional instrumental and folk songs of Ireland and Scotland.    

 

Red Priest

Internationally acclaimed Baroque ensemble, Red Priest, presents Nightmare in Venice, a theatrical Halloween fantasy of some of the most extraordinary chamber music of the 17th century with magical and mysterious works by Vivaldi, Tartini, Corelli, and the aptly named LeStrange. Co-sponsored by the Daugherty Visiting Artist Fund.

 

Lee Jordan-Anders

Pianist Lee Jordan-Anders presents a gallery of musical canvases framed by works of art from the Chrysler Museum's permanent collection.

 

 

The Russian Nightingale

THE RUSSIAN NIGHTINGALE

A Laureate of the Tchaikovsky International Competition (Moscow) and the Glinka Vocal International Competition (Minsk), Svetlana Strezeva is former Prima Dona of the Moldova National Opera Company, and has been praised as "The Great Russian Nightingale" by Russia's St. Petersburg Press. She is joined by her daughter, pianist Milana Strezeva, founding member of the award-winning Manhattan Piano Trio.

 

Christmas Tree

Sounds of the season fill Hofheimer in this annual classic. Featured performers include the College Choir and the Wesleyan Singers under the direction of Dr. David Clayton, the Virginia Handbell Consort under the direction of Al Reese, and soprano Billye Brown Youmans. Early reservations are encouraged. Co-sponsored by the Center for Sacred Music.

 

Romanza IV

Duo Jota-A perform works by Chausson, Debussy, and Brahms, and are joined by poet Michael Blumenthal in their annual Valentine concert. Presented by the Daugherty Visiting Artist Fund.

 

 

American Spiritual Ensemble

Dr. Everett McCorvey leads America's finest singers in thrilling renditions of classic spirituals.  The ensemble, comprised of university faculty and professional vocalists, has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and South America, and was featured in the PBS documentary on this history of the Negro spiritual. Co-sponsored by the Office of the Academic Dean, the Wesleyan Activities Council, and the Office of International and Intercultural Programs.

 

Michael Daniels

MICHAEL DANIELS

Principal cellist of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Michael Daniels performances have included such diverse experiences as solo appearances in Saint-SaëÎns Concerto in A minor and the Beethoven Triple Concerto, to a duo performance with Bobby McFerrin of Vivaldi's Double Cello Concerto. In this program, Daniels is joined by pianist Charles Woodward.

 

James Piano Quartet

In residence at Sweet Briar College and the Wintergreen Summer Festival, the James Piano Quartet is noted for lively concerts which combine popular chamber works with lesser known, or long forgotten repertoire, and contemporary works commissioned for the ensemble.

 

Tidewater Classical Guitar Orchestra

7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24
THE TIDEWATER CLASSICAL GUITAR ORCHESTRA
$10-adults; $5-seniors/military/students/VWC alumni; free to the VWC Community

One of the only guitar orchestras of its kind in the United States, the orchestra includes traditional classical guitars, soprano guitars (tuned a 5th higher and called requintos), and bass guitars (tuned a 4th lower and called bajas). The TGO has performed throughout the region, and represented the U.S. at the International Guitar Festival in Costa Rica.
