Special Olympics Hoops Tournament a Success
Virginia Wesleyan teamed up with Special Olympics Virginia Feb. 23 for the annual Special Olympics Tidewater Regional Basketball Tournament, an event hosted by the College for more than a decade. The tournament was organized by ten students, who managed the staffing of 125 volunteers at various stations throughout the Batten Center. Greek-life members and other campus organizations escorted the participants through the convocation center for the traditional parade of athletes, signaling the opening of the games. Many volunteers acted as referees, scorekeepers and cheerleaders while others hosted recreational activities for athletes between competitions. Spearheading the event was VWC Director of Community Service Diane Hotaling: “Virginia Wesleyan has the most incredible volunteers. Everyone who stepped up to take a management position and everyone who came out to cheer on the athletes brought their best and gave their all to ensure that the athletes had a fabulous experience.” For more information, contact Diane Hotaling at 757.455.3216 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
