@VWC in the Media
A study titled “Are There Atheists in Foxholes? Combat Intensity and Religious Behavior” by Craig Wansink, VWC Professor of Religious Studies, and his brother Brian Wansink, a professor at Cornell University, recently received quite a bit of media attention including features in the Washinton Post and the Virginian-Pilot. The College's recent announcement about the Goode family's $5 million challenge gift for a new academic arts building was featured in the Virginian-Pilot. Tori Higginbotham '14, the first softball player in VWC history to receive all-American honors two years in a row, was recently featured in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Communication professor Kathy Merlock Jackson was quoted in the Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington) in an article about the birthday rituals of boomers. Alumnus Byron "B.J" Wilkinson '84 was recently named Police Chief for the City of Sidney, Nebraska. He was featured in the Star-Herald (Scottsbluff, Nebraska). Alumna Kelly (Convirs) Fowler '03 was featured on the cover of the "Home" section of the Virginian-Pilot. Fowler is a teacher at Lynnhaven Elementary in Virginia Beach but started her own business renovating Victorian era houses.

Jim Deickman   Bob Marlin
Featured Alumnus:
James Deickman ’73
James Deickman ’73 knows how to keep busy. It’s been 40 years since the philosophy major graduated from VWC, and he hasn’t slowed down a bit. Splitting his time between Richmond, Virginia and Leland, North Carolina, Deickman now works as an information technology programmer and technical business/systems analyst for the Virginia Department of Transportation. He fills his spare time surfing, salsa dancing, playing the baritone ukulele and jamming out on the guitar. Guitar is a pastime he's particularly passionate about, and Deickman is proud to say that he's played alongside legendary musicians Charlie Byrd, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and founder of Norfolk’s Griggs School of Music, John Griggs. The active alumnus is married to wife Elaine and has a son, Joshua, and a daughter, Dara.

How did your time at Virginia Wesleyan College shape the person you are today?
Logical thinking led to my interest in programming. I feel I am easy going and reasonable, at least most of the time.

What are some of your favorite memories of professors, mentors or friends at VWC?
I loved the small classrooms and open discussion. The staff was young but well educated and could pass that on.

How do you describe the Virginia Wesleyan experience to friends and colleagues?
It is a great institution where you can get a great education.

Share your thoughts about one or more of the following: the value of a liberal arts education, the “small college difference,” unique opportunities you had at VWC.
At that time in my life, the VWC experience allowed me the time that I needed for introspection, not only about my personal life but also about what I was learning and how I could apply it. More
