| Featured Alumni | | BLADEN CLARK FINCH, 2003 Originally from Lawrenceville, Virginia, Bladen Finch has worked for the Virginia state Senate Clerk's Office as the Civics Coordinator and Assistant to the Deputy Clerk (pictured, center, with his fellow staff) since September 2008 after leaving VWC as Associate Director of Admissions. A communications and journalism major at VWC, Bladen served as photo editor for the Marlin Chronicle and was a member of the Wesleyan Ambassadors, the Society of Collegiate Journalists and Lambda Pi Eta. His current job finds him involved in a variety of exciting projects—from conducting legislative research to overseeing the senate page program to acting as liaison between the senate and the film industry. When Steven Spielberg and crew are in Richmond this fall filming scenes for the long-awaited biopic Lincoln, Bladen will be on set whenever they're on capital grounds. He is very active with his hometown of Lawrenceville, assisting in their efforts to market the community to new businesses and residents. How did your time at Virginia Wesleyan College shape the person you are today? I came to Virginia Wesleyan as a transfer student with low grades and strong desire to turn my academic background around. Most of my life was spent in a rural, economically depressed part of Virginia. The supportive atmosphere and welcoming community at VWC helped me achieve success. The College showed me how to believe in myself and proved I was not just a student; I was a member of a family that wanted to see me succeed. Virginia Wesleyan is a special place and will always be an important part of my life. The staff, faculty and students should speak about the College with pride. I do. What are some of your favorite memories of friends, professors or mentors at VWC? There are so many people to whom I owe a great deal of thanks. From the Admissions Office to the librarians and my professors; everyone I came in contact with was there every step of the way with assistance, advice and encouragement. Dr. Bill Ruehlmann and Dr. Kathy Merlock Jackson always offered positive reinforcement. They knew I could succeed and never gave up on me. How are Wesleyan alumni different from other college graduates? I have had the opportunity to work with graduates from University of Virginia, Washington and Lee, James Madison University and Virginia Military Institute. Virginia Wesleyan graduates are competitive with alums from well established state universities and other institutes of higher education from across the county. VWC graduates have been engaged in many diverse aspects of college life. They have gained an appreciation of those less fortunate, possess an ability to navigate the complex job market we face today, understand the importance of civic engagement and can exercise good citizenship. Anything else about your VWC experience you'd like to share? Alumni are a key component to the future of the College. I ask all alums to make a contribution to the Annual Fund, Athletic Fund or other fund raising efforts. Small donations are just as important as large contributions, and the College truly appreciates each and every one. | | Alumni News | | A Homecoming Celebration 50 Years in the Making VWC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and that means a Homecoming and Parent Weekend to remember, October 7-9! Be on the lookout for email, mail, or a phone call asking you to update your contact information beginning in July 2011. | | Alumni Events | | Alumni for Habitat for Humanity VWC is teaming up with Bank of America to build our fourth Habitat for Humanity House.
