Ronald Lee Swan Jr. '77
Ron SwanRon Swan majored in English while at Virginia Wesleyan College, but the surfing community knows him through his pivotal role in the East Coast Surfing Championship. A lifetime member of Virginia Beach Jaycees and a 2009 inductee to the East Coast Surfing Championship's Legend's Hall Of Fame, Swan was instrumental in bringing ECSC back to its original home at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. He has also become a successful business man as the president of Advanced Dealer Services, an automotive services company, and he credits much of that success to the "nurturing environment" he encountered at VWC. He still surfs competitively, enjoys woodworking and is passionate about his 1962 Willys Jeep. He lives in Virginia Beach with his wife, Allison. His daughter, Brittany, attends University of Miami, Florida, and his son, Lee, is a first-year student at Hampden Sydney College.

How did your time at Virginia Wesleyan College shape the person you are today? Much of whatever it is I am today has a basis from VWC. I didn't realize it then, but it was a peaceful nurturing, 'free thought' environment.

What are some of your favorite memories of professors, mentors or friends at VWC? The knowledge and passion of Richard Lapchick, Larry Hultgren, Richard Hirch, Gordon Magnuson and the dry wit of Dr. Harkey.

How do you describe the Virginia Wesleyan experience to friends and colleagues? I would have been more lost on a big campus. Being one of several Republicans on campus led to some lively discussions, and of course being Episcopalian, I was on the receiving end of my fellow Methodist's ecclesiastical humor. But that's point. In a small nurturing environment we all knew each other and could joke, discuss, and disagree all the time. It's a beautiful college.

Share your thoughts about the value of a liberal arts education and the "small college difference." A liberal arts education is a basis of western civilization society. One must be exposed to many thoughts to grow and mature, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally. All this lends itself to a higher emotional I.Q. If you are in a class with 60 other students, or it's an online course, do you really get the inflection and tone of a professor reading T.S. Elliot's 'The Wasteland.'? (No one could read it like Gordon Magnuson). It's more than just substance; it's all the emotions, and in a small college, you feel it. I realize now that many of our thought processes and how we feel about things are in large part derived from the VWC experience. Altruism, paying it forward, is also part of what one takes with them after graduation.

Anything else about your time at VWC you would like to share?
My old dog, Thel, went to school every day, sometimes class, had a picture student I.D. and wouldn't eat the cafeteria food, but that was 35 years ago. The food's better now.
