Sep 9, 2008: Students Tour TFC Recycling Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College's Office of Community Service will take students to tour the Tidewater Fibre Corp. (TFC) Recycling Center, located in Chesapeake, Va., from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12.

Students will have the opportunity to tour the facility and see first hand where their recyclables go, and learn about the different recycling processes.

"Touring the Tidewater Fibre Recycling Center is a fascinating experience," said Diane Hotaling, director of the office of community service. "In addition, whatever questions the students have about recycling, they can ask the staff at the Recycling Center."

This is not the first time that the Office of Community Service has coordinated with the Recycling Center so that Virginia Wesleyan students can tour the facility. Last year, Dr. Elizabeth Malcolm, assistant professor of ocean and atmospheric studies, took nine of her students on the tour and had great success.

"The students that came last year seemed to get a lot out of their experience," said Hotaling. "They were already pretty aware of recycling, and they asked a lot of good questions."

The tour is part of an ongoing effort in conjunction with the Marlins Go Green campaign to address environmental issues on campus and to promote conservation and environmental stewardship among Virginia Wesleyan's students, faculty and staff. Other examples of the greening effort include recycling bins placed around buildings and in residence halls, and the distribution of compact florescent light bulbs to all students during Orientation.

Students can sign up for the tour at the Aquarium in the Jane P. Batten Student Center on Tuesday, Sept. 9 and Thursday, Sept. 11 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The tour group will meet in the Batten Lobby on Friday, Sept. 12, depart from campus at 1:30 p.m. and return at 4:30 p.m.

"It’s incumbent on the College to educate the students to inspire them to engage in sustainable practices by engaging in sustainable practices itself," said Hotaling. "We're proud to be apart of that."
