Library Usage Policies

Library users are expected to conform to conduct acceptable in a research setting.  Usage of library spaces shall be consistent with the educational mission of Virginia Wesleyan College.

FOOD & DRINK POLICY

The following guidelines ensure that students will have a space conducive to research, learning and quiet study while protecting the materials, furnishings and equipment of the library.

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome in the main library; messy food (i.e., food that is greasy, sticky, or crumbly) should be eaten in the 24-hour study space.
  • Keep all food and drink away from keyboards, books, and other library materials.
  • Dispose of trash in trash cans and use available blue recycling bins. Dining hall dishes should be returned to the dining hall.
  • Group parties are not permitted in the library.
  • Food deliveries are not permitted and will be turned away.
  •  “No Fault” policy: report spills immediately so we can ensure that damaged equipment, materials, furniture or carpeting is properly treated and there is appropriate clean-up.

The library reserves the right to enforce and/or amend these policies and to further limit food and drink in the library as needed to ensure the safety and protection of the students, staff, building, materials and facilities.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in making this policy a success.

Policy revision December 2009

NOISE

  • Expect "shushing" in order to keep the Library a quiet space.  Feel free to do some "shushing" yourself!
  • If you are asked to be quiet more than once, we'll direct you to an appropriate space (study room, corner, 24-hour lounge)
  • If you are noisy or disruptive, you may be asked to leave the Library. This is an academic space where students should be able to get away from the noise in dorms.

Maps on the first floor show quiet and group study areas. It is up to you to find an appropriate space and to behave in a manner respectful of your peers.

STUDY ROOMS

  • Groups have priority for use over individuals. You may be asked to share the room if seats are available.
  • Students who need to view “Library Use Only” reserve DVDs and VHS tapes for class have priority over those not using audiovisual equipment.

EXAM/EXTENDED LIBRARY HOURS

During exam/extended hours, the Library will be an EXTREME QUIET ZONE and library usage policies will be strictly enforced.

Questions about library policies should be discussed with the Library Director or appropriate designee.
