Our world is a very big place! The Virginia Wesleyan Office of International and Intercultural Programs (OIP) is your passport to the world! The OIP reference library houses literature from colleges and universities all over the world as places of study. The OIP library is located in the Jane P. Batten Student Center, Suite #22. When you have a couple minutes of free time, stop in and take a look- you have nothing to lose and the world to gain!

German Exchange Program

If you are interested in studying abroad at Humboldt University, check out the HU Guide for International Students.

To assist exchange students with the transition to life and study in Germany, Humboldt offers an International Club called "Orbis Humboldtianus". "Orbis" provides various programs and services such as Studis4Studis Mentor Programme, Visa service, cultural excursions and counseling services.

"Hier las Einstein!" ("Einstein taught here!") Virginia Wesleyan College has a direct exchange program with the Humboldt University in Berlin. We send an advanced student of German there for a semester (or two!), and they send one here to study! Visit Humboldt's Web site, http://www.hu-berlin.de/, to learn more. Mexico Exchange Program

"¡Ven a la UMAD!" ("Come to UMAD!") Puebla is a metropolis of more than one million people and is the commercial center and capital of the state with the same name. VWC students are encouraged to explore this remarkable city, its people and its culture. To learn more about the Universidad of Madero (UMAD) visit its Web site http://www.umad.edu.mx.

Japan Exchange Program

The Virginia Wesleyan and Kansai Gaidai University Exchange Program is a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the Japanese language and culture. Students who love anime, manga, martial arts or just have a general interest in Japanese or Asian culture will love Kansai Gaidai University.

Kansai Gaidai University is a private, fully-accredited, non-profit institution located in Hirakata City, Osaka. The university has a total enrollment of about 13,000 students, of which approximately 700 are international status. The University has four academic programs and offers a range of courses from business and economics to martial arts and Japanese brush painting (sumi-e).

Study at Kansai Gaidai is open to students of all majors. Eligible students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and have at least junior status. For more details and application visit http://www.kansaigaidai.ac.jp/asp/.

Scholarships are available from The Japan Student Organization (JASSO). Interested students should check with their advisor and the OIP Director to determine their eligibility.

"A Tale of Two Cities"

Join Dr. Michael Hall in "A Tale of Two Cities" offered during the summer and winter session. Alternating cities such as London and Paris, or Rome and Paris allow students to explore art, literature, theater, and history of European cities.

London

While in London you'll take a tour of the historic Tower of London, attend a West End play, explore British museums and galleries. You'll visit Westminster Abbey, the traditional coronation and burial site for English monarchs, and see Buckingham Palace, the residence of the royal family.

parisParis

The Parisian experience allows gastronomic exploration at Parisian restaurants, highlights of the Louvre Museum and a nighttime assent of the Eiffel Tower. Time in Paris also includes a train ride to Versailles to visit the palace and water gardens.

Rome

Tour Imperial Rome and visit the Colosseum and the Palatine hill where the villas of the emperors overlooked the Circus Maximus and the Roman Forum. You'll explore the unique collections of the Vatican Museums and see the renowned frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica.

Belize (Biology 435)

Visit a variety of sites in Belize, including coral reefs and tropical rain forests. This trip will focus on marine biology, coral reef biology, rain forest ecology, mangrove systems, cave
systems, Mayan archeology and conservation biology. You'll spend a week on Amergris Caye and visit the Mayan ruins on the mainland with plenty of opportunities for snorkeling,
subterranean river tubing, and a trip to the Belize Zoo.

BIO/EES 250: Field Experiences course has no prerequisites.

Other locations include Trinidad and Costa Rica.

Belize (REC 347)

Into the wild, Belizean style! REC 347 offers students an opportunity to plan, prepare, and implement an overnight back country experience. Learn expedition kayaking skills while experiencing the warm waters, bird life and islands of Belize! Float on an inner tube through a cave system, camp on islands and spend your days paddling and snorkeling among Belizean reefs. A series of experiences, discussions, and readings about current issues and practices in outdoor recreation and education will inform our time in Belize.

Take a walk through the history of Berlin, Paris, London, Vienna, and Prague. This winter session course is taught at various European cities where you'll learn about the history of the cities by experiencing their art, architecture, and public spaces. Not only do we visit museums and key landmarks, but we also attend cultural events such as symphony and rock concerts. Central to our study of these European capitals is an investigation of the historical debates that have erupted over the use of city spaces.

Costa Rica

This tropical paradise is the ideal place to study biology and geology. You'll explore and research Costa Rica's diverse ecosystems.

A full immersion summer course in a city of spectacular historical significance and architectural beauty, you'll experience the many, rich manifestations of the culture while improving individual proficiency in Spanish. Home-stays, classroom instruction and frequent excursions to other cities and sites of interest, allow enhanced opportunity to understand the language and the culture.

This course is recommended for Spanish majors and for students who wish to fulfill the General Studies foreign language requirement. Generally offered each summer.

NewZealandNew Zealand

For 16 days students travel the North and South Islands of New Zealand, a small nation committed to sustainability and eco-tourism. New Zealand's small size makes it possible to experience its incredible geographic and cultural diversity during the winter session which is summer time in the Southern Hemisphere. The photographic opportunities are tremendous with glaciers, rain forests, thirty-foot-tall ferns, geysers, and rocky, black sand beaches. Our tour visits museums and galleries that showcase a thriving arts community as well as the culture of the Maori, the largest Polynesian population found anywhere on the planet. The trip features daily excursions such as wildlife cruises or touring botanical gardens, wonderful food, and comfortable shared accommodations. A future photography and biology trip to Australia's east coast is being planned jointly by art and biology faculty.

Greece (Athens, Aegina, Eleusis, Corinth, Nauplion, Epidaurus, Mycenae and Tiryns, Olympia, Delphi)

The history, religion, art, and architecture of Greece through material culture – from the Bronze Age to the Roman period! The Greeks invented democracy, staved off an invasion or two by Persian armies, and laid the foundations for modern science, philosophy, architecture, sculpture, and literature. The cities of Greece were also an early hotbed of Christianity, and many of the sites that we visit (Corinth, the Areopagus, etc.) are also famous from the journeys of Paul. Topics to be covered include:
the political and religious architecture of the city of Athens; the Eleusinian Mysteries and Greek religion, the Greek Bronze Age and the truth or lack thereof of Greek myths, Greek
theaters, Greek healing cults, the ancient Olympics.

Individual programs must still be approved by the Office of International and Intercultural Programs. Program approval is based on individual program cost, student GPA, student maturity/faculty recommendations and other factors.
