History and Your Future

History majors emerge from our program extremely well equipped to excel in today's competitive world with sharp and supple minds and a wide variety of important skills. The critical reading, writing, and thinking skills taught in the history classroom are essential for a variety of careers. Many history students work in law, journalism, government, politics, and international affairs, as well as other fields. Businesses seek history majors because of the keen analytical and writing skills they offer.

History likewise offers excellent preparation for graduate school – even if you do not elect to study history at the graduate level. Law schools, in particular, seek history majors because of their analytical skills.

The history student community at Virginia Wesleyan College is an important complement to the academic program. We have an active history honor society and club, Phi Alpha Theta, which sponsors field trips to the many historical sites of Virginia and movie nights among other events. Phi Alpha Theta serves as a bridge to connect the classroom with a variety of social programs, fully integrating students into the discipline of history beyond the classroom.
