The Praxis Core test is one of the requirements for admission to the Education Department. Once the student passes all sections of the Praxis Core test and meets the other requirements for admission, the student can be admitted to the education program.
On March 24, 2004 the Board of Education approved the use of the SAT as a substitute test for Praxis Core (Reading, Writing and Mathematics) required for initial licensure. The board approved a score of 1000 on the SAT, taken prior to April 1, 1995, with at least 450 on the verbal and 510 on the mathematics tests or a score of 1100 on the SAT, taken after April 1, 1995, with at least 530 on the verbal and 530 on the mathematics tests as a substitute for Praxis Core. Please note that the SAT was approved as a substitute test only for Praxis Core. individuals also must meet the Praxis II (subject area assessment) for initial licensure.
On September 22, 2004, the Board of Education approved the use of the ACT as a substitute test for Praxis Core (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics). The Board approved a composite score of 21 on the ACT, taken prior to April 1, 1995, with the Mathematics score at least 21 and an English Plus Reading score of at least 37 or a composite score of 24 on the ACT, taken after April 1, 1995, with the Mathematics score at least 22 and an English Plus Reading score of at least 46.
On March 18, 2010, the Board of Education approved the use of the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) as an optional test for the Praxis Core Reading and Writing Tests for an individual seeking entry into a teacher preparation program. An individual choosing to use the VCLA as an optional assessment for the Praxis Core Reading and Writing tests will be required to meet the Praxis Core Mathematics assessment (or equivalent SAT or ACT scores).
The Praxis II test must be taken and passed before student teaching. The licensure application can be submitted for teacher certification after the student has passed Praxis Core, VCLA, VRA/RVE (where applicable), and Praxis II in addition to completing all other program requirements.
