Field Experiences

Education Department Field Experiences

Early field experiences begin for most students during the sophomore year. The experiences are listed below by certification area. Students must request a placement for a field experience through the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences at the time that they register for classes. Students planning on student teaching must have all passing test scores submitted to the Education Department by March 1 for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester. The deadlines ensure that paperwork can be processed and placements can be requested in a timely manner.

Elementary Education preK-6

The preK-6 program is designed to provide the successful student with an endorsement appropriate to teaching in Pre Kindergarten classrooms through sixth grade.

EDUC 330 Elementary Practicum: preK-3 (1)

altProvides an opportunity to apply teaching methods, practice skills in teaching discipline-specific methodology, and learn to implement classroom management strategies. A 50 hour supervised field experience in a primary classroom is provided. Pass/fail grading. Must be taken with EDUC 329.

EDUC 434 Elementary Preservice Teaching I (8)

This preservice teaching experience is in grades 1-3. Seminars are included. Prerequisite: admission to the Professional Education Program.

EDUC 435 Elementary Preservice Teaching II (8)

This preservice teaching experience is in grades 4-5. Seminars are included. Prerequisite: admission to the Professional Education Program.

altSecondary Education 6-12

The secondary education program is designed to provide the successful student with an endorsement appropriate to teaching in the middle and high schools in grades 6-12.

EDUC 340 Secondary Practicum: Visual Arts, Foreign Language, Vocal/Choral/Theatre Arts preK-12 (1)

Provides an opportunity to apply teaching methods, practice skills in teaching discipline-specific methodologies, and learn to implement classroom management strategies.

EDUC 445 Secondary Preservice Teaching I (8)

This preservice teaching experience is fulfilled in grades 6-8. The student must request a placement from the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences the semester before student teaching. Seminars are included. Prerequisite: admission to the Professional Education Program. Students majoring in Art, Foreign Languages, Vocal/Choral and Theatre Arts

EDUC 446 Secondary Preservice Teaching II (8)

This preservice teaching experience is fulfilled in grades 9-12. The student must request a placement from the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences the semester before student teaching. Seminars are included. Prerequisites: admission to the Professional Education Program. Offered each semester.

preK-12 Certification

This education program is designed to provide the successful student with an endorsement appropriate to teaching in the pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades. The student must choose a major from the following: Visual Arts (preK-12); Foreign Language preK-12 (French, German, Spanish).

EDUC 340 Secondary Practicum: 6-12 Visual Arts, Foreign Language preK-12 (1)

EDUC 445 Secondary Preservice Teaching I (8)

This preservice teaching experience is fulfilled in grades 6-8. The student must request a placement from the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences the semester before student teaching. Seminars are included. Prerequisite: admission to the Professional Education Program. Students majoring in art, and foreign language for K-12 teacher certification also enroll in EDUC 445/446. Offered each semester.

EDUC 446 Secondary Preservice Teaching II (8)

This preservice teaching experience is fulfilled in grades 9-12. The student must request a placement from the Coordinator of Clinical Experiences the semester before student teaching. Seminars are included. Prerequisites: admission to the Professional Education Program. Offered each semester.

Special Education General Curriculum K-12

The Special Education General Curriculum K-12 program is designed to provide the successful student with an endorsement appropriate to teaching kindergarten through twelfth grade.

SPED 385 Curriculum and Instruction K-12 Practicum (1)

Provides an opportunity for students to observe and teach in an inclusion classroom at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Students have a 25-hour placement in each of these grade levels. Pass/fail grading. Prerequisite: SPED 371. Corequisite: SPED 384. Offered spring of odd-numbered years.

SPED 438 Special Education Preservice Teaching I (8)

A preservice teaching experience in grades K-6. Seminars are included. Attendance is mandatory. Prerequisite: admission to the Education Department.

SPED 439 Special Education Preservice Teaching II (8)

A preservice teaching experience in grades 9-12. Seminars are included. Attendance is mandatory. Prerequisite: admission to the Education Department. Offered each semester.
