Brett S. Heindl is an assistant professor of Political Science at Virginia Wesleyan College. Before coming to VWC, he held visiting positions at Brown University and Bucknell University.
He received his BA in anthropology from Ithaca College, and his MA and PhD in political science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.
His dissertation research examined transnational political activism among Cuban, Irish, and Jewish communities in the United States. The project focused on ethnic lobbying and transnational advocacy networks among moderate and radical factions in each community.
He also carried out field research on the role that civic and political institutions play in the political incorporation of recent immigrants in five cities: Lansing, MI, Spokane, WA, Waco, TX, Chico, CA, and Fort Collins, CO.
In addition to revising his dissertation for publication, he has recently begun a new project comparing the Spanish, Dutch, and French states%u2019 policies for integrating Muslims of North African descent. Of particular concern is that way that national border control, citizenship, and social policies influence a) how immigrants and refugees view the state and their place in the dominant society and b) their patterns of political mobilization.
Main Areas of Interest: Foreign policy, migration, human rights, global governance, and social movements.
