Academic Associations

Friends of Psi Chi

Friends of Psi Chi is an informal campus group affiliated with the psychology honor society of Psi Chi. The group is open to all students interested in the field of psychology.

Health and Human Services Club

The Health and Human Services Club is intended to provide information to any students interested in the field of Human Services. Members of the club provide advice to students interested in majoring in Human Services and completing a department sponsored internship. The club also works to promote a sense of fellowship among students enrolled or interested in Human Services courses.

Math/Computer Science Club

The Math/Computer Science Club was organized to provide a means for those with similar interest in math and computer science to meet and to increase the interest of other students on campus in math and computer science.

Political Science and International Studies Association

The Political Science and International Studies Association encourages all forms and expressions of political interest and opinion on this campus in a non-partisan manner. The goal of the organization is to raise student awareness about the impact of politics and legislation on the nation. The club sponsors speakers, films, and mock debates.

Recreation Majors Club

The Recreation Majors Club provides students with opportunities for recreational activities and provides leadership experiences for recreation majors. Members travel to the state conference and sponsor various activities.

Science Club

The VWC Science Club serves science majors and minors by providing educational programming relating to science occupations and careers, a support structure to increase informal student-student and student-faculty interactions, and opportunities to increase public awareness of science issues on our campus and in the community. This organization is open to all science majors and minors, as well as those with interest in science.

The Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) is an organization for students, faculty and staff focused on enhancing management skills, providing global networking possibilities, and exposure to LAMP at VWC.

Student Virginia Education Association

The Student Virginia Education Association (S.V.E.A.) brings education majors together for workshops and programs designed to help with problems and provide ideas for use in the classroom. It gives members information about the historical, ethical and recent trends in education.

Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta is the international honor society for Sociology which encourages the study of humanity through social awareness and research.

As the Honor Society for Criminal Justice, the mission of Alpha Phi Sigma is to promote critical thinking, rigorous scholarship and life-long learning; to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research, to elevate the ethical standards of the criminal justice professions and to sustain in the public mind the benefit and necessity of education and professional training.

Alpha Sigma Lambda

Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society for students in continuing higher education. The Virginia Wesleyan chapter was formed to recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the Adult Studies Program.

Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta)

TriBeta is the national biological honor society, which is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.

Delta Phi Alpha

Delta Phi Alpha welcomes students who excel in the study of the German language and literature.

Honors and Scholars Association

The association provides an instrument through which members can meet and talk about academic concerns and discuss social issues that affect Wesleyan Scholars.

Lambda Phi Eta

Lambda Pi Eta is the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association. The goals of Lambda Pi Eta are to recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement; stimulate interest in the field of communication; promote and encourage professional development among communication majors; provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the field; establish and maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and students; and explore options for further graduate studies.

Omicron Delta Kappa

Omicron Delta Kappa is a national leadership honor society which recognizes accomplishments of students in five areas: scholarship, athletics, journalism, campus leadership and the performing arts. Candidates for induction must have a minimum 3.25 G.P.A., be a junior or senior and have demonstrated leadership skills through participation in campus organizations.

Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta is the international honor society for History. Phi Alpha Theta serves to recognize outstanding academic achievement in the field of history and to promote an appreciation of history among students. The society sponsors speakers, debates, and seminars throughout the year.

Phi Eta Sigma

Phi Eta Sigma identifies and celebrates the academic achievement of Virginia Wesleyan freshmen. A candidate for induction must be a freshman or first semester sophomore with a 3.5 G.P.A. Your induction into Phi Eta Sigma is a lifelong membership.

Pi Delta Phi

Pi Delta Phi is a nationally affiliated French Honor Society.

Pi Sigma Alpha

Pi Sigma Alpha is Virginia Wesleyan's chapter of the National Political Science Society. The group's aim is to recognize outstanding students in Political Science and to promote understanding of political issues.

Psi Chi

Psi Chi is the national honor society for Psychology. The organization encourages, stimulates and maintains excellence in scholarship and works to advance the science of psychology.

Rho Phi Lambda

Rho Phi Lambda is the honor society for Recreation and Leisure Studies.

Sigma Beta Delta

Sigma Beta Delta is the international honor society in business, management, and administration. It was established to encourage and recognize scholarship and accomplishment among students of business, management, and administration and to encourage and promote aspirations toward personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.

Sigma Delta Pi

Sigma Delta Pi is a national honor society for Spanish. The society recognizes students who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish Language.

Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta is the English honor society. Members hope to increase student awareness of activities in the field of English and to encourage reading of classic world literature.

Society for Collegiate Journalists

Through admission to the Society student communicators are rewarded for their efforts, services and accomplishments. The Society hopes to elevate the cause of mass communications; to teach the ethics, technique and mechanics of good communication. Members are also encouraged to participate in local and campus communication media.

Theta Alpha Kappa

To recognize achievement in religious studies and to encourage an interest in religious studies.

International Clubs

American Indian Council

The American Indian Council strives to promote American Indian culture among the Virginia Wesleyan community. The council provides a meeting place for native students and those who wish to learn more about the culture.

Asian American Society

The Asian American Society promotes Asian culture and supports other cultural groups at Virginia Wesleyan and in the community. The society welcomes all students who are Asian and those who are interested in the Asian culture.

Black Student Union

The Black Student Union helps blacks and other minorities adapt academically and socially to college life. The students reach out to the Hampton Roads area through positive community events. The union also brings together all aspects of black student life to improve the campus environment for all.

Campus Kaleidoscope

Campus Kaleidoscope is a student chapter of The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ). Kaleidoscope serves as an umbrella organization to bring together students and student organizations to sponsor events that will enhance appreciation of our differences, develop personal and institutional understanding of bias, bigotry and racism, and empower student leaders to include those who are different to make our community more inclusive and, as a result, more productive and innovative.

Cultural Arts Society

The Cultural Arts Society works to educate the community about cultural awareness through the arts.

Sociedad Americana De Latinos Y Sus Amigos (S.A.L.S.A.)

S.A.L.S.A. provides the opportunity for the campus community to participate and learn about the Hispanic culture.

Special Interest Groups

Cheerleaders

The cheerleaders are an enthusiastic group of students who support and encourage team spirit for athletic competitions.

College Republicans

The VWC College Republicans Chapter is a unit of the VA Federation of College Republicans and a chapter of the National Federation of College Republicans. On the campus level, the chapter is run by a president, vice president and master at arms. Then, at the state level, the Federation is run by a president, 3 vice presidents, a secretary and a treasurer, as well as an executive board consisting of the officers of each of the College Republican units in the state. The National Federation is run similarly, with the executive committee consisting of the state level officers. College Republicans act as liaisons to officials of their state party and their nationally elected representatives. The College Republicans engage in awareness efforts on and off campus detailing elections, the electoral process, and most crucial, informing the campus/local citizens on many Republican causes ranging from pro-life issues to the defense of the nation, firearm rights and taxation. VWC College Republicans are active in many phases of party functions such as: campaign co-directing with candidates and the Virginia Beach Republican Party, poll working, rally planning, attending rallies and formal political celebrations in support of candidates and many other exciting endeavors with the local, state and national Republican Party as situations arise.

Fencing Club

The members of the fencing club hope to introduce and cultivate an interest in fencing.

IMAGEnation

The members of IMAGEnation hope to foster an environment which is conducive to the discussion and practical applications of role-playing games, video games and Japanese animation.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations serves as a campus organization for students interested in international politics, public policy and diplomacy. Every spring the VWC chapter joins teams from around the world to attend the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City. At the conference, members of the VWC delegation represent a single country on various committees and commissions. Transformed into diplomats, students must rely on pre-conference research to successfully and accurately represent the positions of their assigned country. NMUN is a fantastic opportunity to understand diplomacy and public policy from the inside out, and to network with other ambitious domestic and international students.

ROTC

Virginia Wesleyan College offers students the opportunity to enroll in an Army ROTC program through an extension agreement with the established ROTC unit at Old Dominion University. Courses are offered which develop a student's ability to organize, motivate and lead others. Further information on this program may be obtained by contacting the VWC Admissions Office

Student Environmental Awareness League

The Student Environmental Awareness League (S.E.A.L.) attempts to raise consciousness of current issues in the environment. The organization feels that through knowledge of environmental issues, each person will become conscious of their own actions and hopefully will make a positive change.

Wesleyan Beekeepers Association

The Wesleyan Beekeepers Association's mission is to further beekeeping, to promote awareness of the importance of bees to the environment, and to increase students' and the public's awareness of the beekeeping community. Beekeeping is one of the many ways to explore mankind's interactions with his world and the Wesleyan Beekeepers Association promotes the ability of students to enjoy the broad range of experiences that a liberal arts education provides.

Wesleyan Surfriders Association

The Wesleyan Surfriders Association gives students who are interested in ocean/aquatic sports a peer group as well as creating a community service organization.

Women's Resource Group

The Women's Resource Group promotes issues concerning women's studies through involvement with community, lectures and meetings.

Young Democrats

The Young Democrats provides an outlet for those students eager to get involved in politics and the Democratic Party. Members promote campus awareness of local, state and national candidates and issues.

National Fraternities and Sororities

Alpha Kappa Alpha

The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha promote true sisterhood and friendship and have had an honorable impression on the community. They believe that their members will find social and economic betterment at the local, state, and international levels through scholastics and ethical standards. They were founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University and their colors are salmon pink and apple green. Service to all mankind.

Alpha Sigma Alpha

Alpha Sigma Alpha encourage within its sisterhood the physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual growth of its members. Every year the chapter supports Alpha Sigma Alpha's national philanthropy, Special Olympics. Alpha Sigma Alpha wishes to support the members as they become all that is within their reach to be and to establish a community between its young women where possible.

Greek Presidents

The association of Greek Presidents provides unity among the social Greek Lettered organizations. Additionally, the presidents coordinate rush events and sponsor a fall and spring event for the entire campus.

Iota Beta

The men of Iota Beta believe that their mission is to develop ethical leaders and promote a lifelong learning commitment to scholastics and philanthopy. Their focus is to guide the development of character of its members. Their mission is to support the principles of brotherhood and promote activities, which develop the mind, body and spirit of all its members.

Kappa Alpha Order

Kappa Alpha Order is a national fraternity whose two primary goals are the acquisition of knowledge and the development of character. To achieve these goals, Kappa Alpha brothers sponsor and participate in programs for VWC and the greater community.

Panhellenic Council

The Virginia Wesleyan Panhellenic Council coordinates sorority rush activities, promotes Greek unity and sponsors functions for all sorority women.

Phi Kappa Tau

Phi Kappa Tau is a national fraternity based on a strong sense of brotherhood and fellowship. Joining the fraternity is considered a special life-long commitment that emphasizes the development of its members both socially and scholastically.

Phi Sigma Sigma

Phi Sigma Sigma is a dynamic sisterhood of powerful women fostering uncompromising principles, igniting positive change and embracing individuality. The mission of Phi Sigma Sigma is to inspire the personal development of each sister and perpetuate the advancement of womanhood. Each year the chapter supports and raises funds for their philanthropy, the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation which supports the National Kidney Foundation, with a Rock-a-thon. The women of Phi Sigma Sigma strive everyday to live out their core values of leadership through service, inclusiveness and life long learning.

Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu, the first "social" fraternity chartered at Virginia Wesleyan, promotes the ideals of love, truth, and honor through the Brotherhood. The brothers engage in many campus and community related events that help to develop the character of each person.

Sigma Sigma Sigma

Sigma Sigma Sigma is the newest national sorority at Virginia Wesleyan. The sorority promotes the betterment of women by encouraging high scholastic achievement, development of leadership skills and encouraging philanthropic events that create a more positive life for people.

Community Service Organizations

Center Ambassadors

Ambassadors for The Center for the Study of Religious Freedom take a stand for fostering religious freedom in a diverse world. They have the opportunity, through programs and small group initiatives, to make a difference in the transformation of our community.

Circle K

Circle K is an international organization affiliated with the Kiwanis clubs. The membership is committed to community service and developing quality leaders and citizens.

Epsilon Sigma Alpha

ESA is an international service and leadership sorority which promotes community service, education, achievement, leadership and sisterhood. Members volunteer time or raise money for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. Our chapter also works with local hospices and homeless shelters.

Student Athlete Mentor Program

SAMS (Student Athlete Mentors) are committed to promoting a safer social environment. Through contact with fellow athletes, the mentors foster an atmosphere that encourages responsibility and discourages substance abuse.

The Diplomat Program

Students who have studied abroad and would like to become key players as volunteers with all services provided by the OIP may apply for the OIP Diplomat Program. Students may speak at an international event on campus, give a Worldwide in Focus presentation about their experience abroad, or assist in the daily activities that take place in the OIP. Some students may wish to help carry out projects with OIP staff members or just help with sorting educational materials in the OIP Resource Library. The opportunities abound and this is a great way to gain experience within the field of international education.

Wesleyan Ambassadors

Wesleyan Ambassadors provide tours and other related services to prospective Virginia Wesleyan students and their families.

Religious Life Organizations

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an interdenominational Christian organization that for more than forty years has been focused on the purpose: "to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church."

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity builds houses in partnership with the working poor. Motivated by the vision of "a decent house in a decent community for God's people in need", students work at local sites. Participation is open to all levels of building skills.

Religious Life Council

Religious Life Council is the umbrella organization which supports and coordinates activities with religious life groups on campus. At the bi-weekly meetings representatives from the various groups share ideas and seek to learn more about each other's beliefs.

Shalom

Shalom promotes the interest and understanding of Judaism in the past, present and future. Anyone at Virginia Wesleyan is welcome to attend the meetings, speakers and trips.

Campus Communications and Media

Marlin Chronicle

The Marlin Chronicle is Virginia Wesleyan's campus newspaper. The paper is published ten times each school year and provides the College community with information about campus and area happenings. The newspaper also provides students and faculty with an outlet for expressing their interests and concerns. Every student with an interest in writing for or producing a newspaper is invited to join the staff.

The Sandpiper

The Sandpiper, published each spring, is the Virginia Wesleyan College yearbook. The staff, comprised of students, write the copy, provide the photographs, and design the layouts for the publication.

VWC Review

VWC Review, published every April, is the student art and literary magazine of Virginia Wesleyan. The purpose of VWC Review is to promote and recognize creative talents in the literary and art fields and to provide a means of acquiring the necessary skills to publish a magazine.

WVAW is the College's student-run radio station. WVAW delivers a variety of music (progressive, pop, metal, classical & rock-n'-roll) and features special interest programming.

Campus Life Organizations

First Year Leadership Council

The Virginia Wesleyan First Year Leadership Council (FYLC) is committed to improving the quality of living on campus, specifically for First Year Students. This Council gets involved in programming, campus wide activities, and community service geared towards First Year Students. This group works closely with the Leadership Council to make a difference in campus life.

Leadership Council

The Virginia Wesleyan Leadership Council (LC) was founded to focus on improving the quality of living on campus for resident students. This Council encourages the Residence Halls to be a positive living and learning environment through programming, campus wide activities, and community service. The LC is governed by upperclassmen that want to make a difference in campus life.
