NEXUS Interfaith Dialogue Series
One of the Center's hallmark programs is the NEXUS Interfaith Dialogue Series, co-sponsored by the Center, The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, and The Virginian-Pilot. The word "nexus" means "a point of connection," and this is what NEXUS is about: connecting people of all faiths through dialogue. Founded in 1999 by Virginian-Pilot religion columnist Betsy Wright Rhodes and Dr. Michael Panitz, Rabbi of Temple Israel in Norfolk, the goal of the NEXUS forum is open and respectful dialogue about our faiths, both our differences and the things we share in common.

“Interfaith Dialogue” is a monthly discussion concerning current events and news reports as they relate to various Faith communities. This series is produced by the Interfaith Dialogue Committee of South Hampton Roads in cooperation with the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan College and the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities.

The "interfaith dialogue" interview of November 5 features Dr. Harvey Cox, the Hollis Research Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. Dr. Cox is recognized as one of the leading spokespersons on religious trends in America. His book "The Secular City" 1965 has been called "one of the most influencial books of Protestant theology in the twentieth century." Dr. Cox delivered the 2012 Cookson Lecture at the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at VWC on November 5. His topic was "Freedom of Religion in America: Its Rocky Past and its Future." Dr. Cox's most recent book, "The Future of Faith" 2009, addresses the increasing emphasis on spirituality over doctrine among large numbers of Christians. (Download mp3)
