Key to the Future Campaign Update

Number 2, January 2006

Master Site Plan Supports Drive to Phi Beta Kappa and Beyond

We will achieve PBK-status by promoting academic excellence in teaching and learning programs, building a strong and diverse student body, and creating a state-of-the-art instructional setting and a campus to support it. Below are some of the planned campus improvements.

Adding Extraordinary New Facilities

Green Science Building - The College plans to build a LEED-certified, platinum green laboratory science building—the only one at a liberal arts college in the world. This building will be the model for how science facilities will be built and how science will be taught in the future. The science building is itself a living laboratory of sustainable design, in which students will study, conduct research, interact and participate in measuring, monitoring, and re-calibrating the performance of the green elements of the facility.

FACT: Our campus is 34 buildings on 300 acres straddling the border of Norfolk and Virgina Beach

Lacrosse/Field Hockey Stadium - This impressive stadium will have synthetic field turf, lights, 1,000 seats, press box, dressing rooms, concessions, parking, and fence. The stadium will place the College in a position to recruit the top lacrosse and field hockey athletes and to host NCAA playoff games

Track and Field Facility – Two years ago, Virginia Wesleyan added men’s and women’s track and field teams to its list of NCAA Division athletics offerings. The College plans to construct a track and field complex to serve as the teams’ home. This sport attracted 25 student athletes the first year, 50 the second, and hopes to attract 100 when the facility is completed.

Modernizing Existing Facilities

Henry Clay Hofheimer II Library - Renovations will transform the library into a hub for study, research and relaxation for students and faculty by adding new floor space, a 24-hour study hall, an instructional technology classroom and computer lab. The library collection will add 50,000 volumes.

Electronic Classrooms - Classrooms will be up fitted with the most modern instructional technology to support the highest quality teaching. This will include digital projectors, computers and complete wireless Internet networking.

Chapel - The Chapel will be completely modernized with a new entry vestibule, glass doors, furniture, wooden stage, alter, podium, roof, wall coverings, slate tile, HVAC, and security system creating a more inviting and spiritual space.

Bray Village and Village II - Existing student housing will be modernized to make it more efficient, comfortable and appealing.

Baseball/Softball Complex - It is the vision of Virginia Wesleyan College to create one of the finest baseball-softball facilities in all of NCAA Division III athletics. Improvements include press box and bleachers as well as a shared facility between baseball and softball to house concessions operations and restrooms.

Progress Toward Our Goal

The Key to the Future Campaign covers five years, from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2008.

As of January 1, 2006, the College was at $34.5 million, an increase of $4.3 million since our last update.

Each endowment, each capital improvement, and every Annual Fund dollar supports the drive to be Phi Beta Kappa-caliber.

Campaign Leadership Gifts

Joan and Macon Brock

Joan and Macon Brock have made a Campaign commitment of $3.3 million. They have been friends of Virginia Wesleyan College for many years. Joan’s uncle Douglas McIntyre served as the College’s first Registrar and was a faculty member for 25 years. Joan served as Chair of the President’s Advisory Council, Chair of the Board of Trustees and has been on the Board for seven years.

Joan and Macon’s Campaign commitment includes current and planned gifts that will support the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom, residential renovations, baseball and softball stadium upgrades, endowed scholarship, Annual Fund for Academic Excellence, Venture Capital Fund, and Marlin Athletic Club. Their gift is comprehensive and touches students in many ways.

FACT: There have been 15 gifts of $500,000 or more to the Key to the Future Campaign

Frank E. Brown

Frank E. Brown, a close friend of Virginia Wesleyan College, made a gift in the early days of the College to build the Bell Tower. On January 26, 2005, VWC was notified that Mr. Brown had included the College in his trust and that the College would receive an additional $2,025,000! To receive this gift, the College must raise funds to match the gift dollar-for-dollar.

All new and increased gifts from alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students to the Annual Fund for Academic Excellence and campaign endowed funds are being matched dollar-for-dollar through the Frank E. Brown Challenge.
