Perkinson hits a milestone as Marlins down Chowan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A fourth kill in Saturday's non-conference volleyball match with Chowan University gave Virginia Wesleyan College senior Jen Perkinson another entry in the Marlins' record book.

That fourth kill moved Perkinson (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) into a lofty place she occupies by herself as she became the first Marlin volleyball player to hit the 1,000 plateau in kills. She finished the match with 13, to move her career total to 1,009.

Her effort also helped guide Virginia Wesleyan to a 30-20, 30-18, 30-20 win over the visiting Hawks at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. The victory improved the Marlins' season record to 13-5, while Chowan dropped to 2-12.

Junior Katie Heilenday (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) produced nine kills in the win and shared team-leading honors in digs with senior Candice Doloresco (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), both recording seven. Sophomore Katie Norland (Homestead, Fla./Miami MAST) added eight kills to the totals to become the third Marlin player this season to surpass 100 kills. She now has 102. Junior Grace Geralds (Garden Ridge, Tex./New Braunfels Canyon) produced 37 assists to increase her season total to 464, tying her for the third highest single-season total in VWC history.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, Oct. 10, motoring to Ashland, Va., to take on the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
