Fall Tryout Information

UPDATE
Fall Tryouts will be held September 6 and 7, 2008.

Candidates will only be selected depending upon how many open slots are available on the team.

General Information

You will need a VWC physical completed and filed with the athletic trainer’s office by Thursday September 4, 2008.

Tryouts will be held in the Main Gym in the Batten Center.

The proper attire for the final day is as follows: for the males cotton or mesh shorts and a VWC t-shirt or polo-style collared shirt and for the females a tight t-shirt/tank top/sports bra and cheer skirt/shorts. There is a judging category on appearance; thus, you should consider clothing that is collegiate, appropriate and appealing. Hair and make-up should be done as if you were cheering at a game. Absolutely no jewelry.

Requirements

  • Cheer: We will teach you a cheer.
  • Dance: We will teach you a dance (females only).
  • Jumps: Toe Touch and one optional
  • Stunts: A liberty with a straight cradle, an extension with a full twist cradle, and one optional stunt.
  • Tumbling: Standing Back-handspring or round off back-handspring (you may have a light spot)

2008 Fall Schedule

These sessions are considered mandatory; you may be excused only with permission of the coach

  • Wednesday September 3 4:30 p.m. - Informational meeting in Batten 228
  • Thursday September 4 – All physicals are due to the Trainers Office. You will NOT be able to tryout without a Physical on file. There will be no exceptions!
  • Saturday 6 – 3 p.m.- 8p.m. – Conditioning Learn the Cheer & Dance. On Friday you will learn a cheer and dance. You will also work on tumbling that you will have to perform for your tryout.
  • Sunday, September 7 – 11 a.m. – until finished – This will be the official tryout day.

To try out in the Fall

A student must be included in the following categories:

  1. attended Virginia Wesleyan College, a community college or another college or university for at least one semester and have earned twelve hours of credit and have attained a college cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
  2. attained a high school GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. You must show evidence that you are attending VWC in the fall.
  3. been selected by the coach and/or the advisor as a result of a videotape entry or a recruiting visit. NO Video tryouts will be accepted in the fall.

*If you make the team at the fall tryout you will be required to make-up the camp that you missed in the summer. Camp is a requirement to stay on the team. Please see the coach for further information.*

Scholarships

Division III colleges do not have athletic scholarships.

There are additional funds that may be available on a financial need basis. Please call the financial aid office for more information. It is imperative that you complete and turn in your FAFSA.
